NFL's Stock Up Stock Down Week 14: Whose Value Is Plummeting After Week 13?
If this week's edition of "Stock Up, Stock Down" were a movie, it would be entitled The Usual Suspects.
Week in and week out, we have been seeing trends of football teams, players and coaches involved in the same shtick. It's getting old and getting to the point that changes are coming.
It already started in Jacksonville. It is rumored in San Diego and it could happen in other "lonely" NFL cities where fans are crying for a victory or changes in coaches and players.
And no, Peyton Manning cannot change everything in Indianapolis.
Heavyweights have become lightweights and lightweights have, well, gotten lost in the windstorm of the season in the NFL.
There needs to be a new movie cast, but with different teams making noise, some are not letting out a whimper.
Minnesota Vikings Defense
1 of 15The Vikings played one hell of a game on Sunday.
Rookie quarterback Christian Ponder threw for 381 yards. Receiver Percy Harvin caught passes for 156 yards.
But something happened Sunday that has happened lately to many teams playing the Denver Broncos.
They got "Tebowed." It's my word—I invented it.
The Vikings had the game won, and then Tim Tebow took over in the final two minutes and set up a game-winning field goal.
Don't worry, Vikings, you are not the only ones to let this happen. Others have felt your pain.
Atlanta Falcons Offense
2 of 15Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, two great receivers and a future Pro Bowl tight end.
And the Atlanta Falcons have trouble scoring on offense.
Against a rookie quarterback in TJ Yates, the Falcons could not overcome a good defense and a 111-yard rushing day by Arian Foster as they fell to the Houston Texans.
I thought this was a playoff-caliber team, but 10 points is not going to win you anything important in the NFL.
The Falcons must find consistent offensive play if they are going to challenge for a playoff birth.
San Diego Chargers Front Office
3 of 15The San Diego Times-Union has reported that it is believed the Spanos family will fire both head coach Norv Tuner and general manager AJ Smith after the season.
Wow, that's a shocker! Didn't see that one coming.
In reality, the Chargers' window for winning looks like it is closing. Philip Rivers does not look like the gunslinger he has been in the past, and tight end Antonio Gates has caught only 40 or so passes this season.
But if management is going to fire its head coach and it is all over California news outlets, shouldn't they just get it over with (much like the Jaguars did with Jack Del Rio) and start planning for the future?
DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles
4 of 15I know the man wants his money, but is Jackson becoming a new version of T.O.?
Jackson is one of the most talented receivers and return men in the NFL, maybe second to Devin Hester when it comes to returning kicks.
But his attitude is a major distraction to the Eagles organization.
If paying him what he is entitled to shuts him up or gets him to play hard and not "quit," then please do it. But for some reason, I don't think it will make everything better in Jackson's eyes.
Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals
5 of 15Dalton still has his Bengals in the playoff contention, and if the season ended today, Cincinnati would be the No. 6 seed.
But Dalton has looked poor against the Steelers in both games this season, and the rookie has played like a rookie the past few weeks.
Dalton needs to find that magic he had coming out of the game if the Bengals are going to make noise in the AFC.
Tom Coughlin, New York Giants
6 of 15Coughlin and his team nearly beat the Green Bay Packers after being slaughtered by the New Orleans Saints last week.
The good news is the team played better. The bad news is it still goes down on paper in the loss column.
Coughlin may be out the door after the season, since this is the team's fourth straight loss.
Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions
7 of 15I waited all week to see this game Sunday night.
And the results went pretty much like I thought they would.
Schwartz told Michelle Tafoya before the game his team was prepared to play without starting tackle Ndomukong Suh.
They weren't in the same ballpark as the Saints. It looked like a pro team had come to play a college program.
The Lions are now 7-5 on the season and need some help to make the playoffs.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills
8 of 15Somehow, you knew the Bills were hitching their wagon to Fitzpatrick too soon.
The Bills signal-caller signed a huge contract extension, and then the team started to falter.
Maybe the two are not related—but then again, who knows?
Buffalo is now 5-7 on the season after being a playoff contender a month ago.
Cleveland Browns Running Attack
9 of 15With Ray Lewis looking on from the sidelines, the Cleveland Browns could not take advantage of the star's absence.
While Ray Rice ran for 204 yards for the Ravens, Browns runners could not get out of their own way.
If the Browns are to show improvement over the next four games, the running game needs to help lead the way.
Andre Johnson, Houston Texans
10 of 15The Texans beat the Atlanta Falcons in an important matchup of potential playoff teams this season.
But for the Texans, the game was not great for star wide receiver Andre Johnson.
Johnson injured his hamstring again, this time on a route across the middle. Johnson has missed time with hamstring injuries this season.
If the Texans are going to go far in the playoffs with a rookie quarterback, they need their best players on the field, including Johnson.
Raheem Morris, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
11 of 15Again, a young coach in the NFL trying to win with young players.
But last season, it was a lot easier for Raheem Morris. This year, not so much.
Morris and the Buccaneers cannot get out of neutral or reverse and have lost five games in a row.
The offense looked stagnant against a Carolina Panthers team that looks to be climbing the rankings of the NFL's young up-and-coming teams.
Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys
12 of 15Kicker Dan Bailey had won two games in a row on the last play of the game for the Cowboys.
This time, his coach cost him a chance to do it again.
Bailey was trotted out to try a 49-yard attempt to win the game.
The first attempt sailed through the uprights, but the officials ruled Garrett called timeout before the kick.
The second attempt was missed, the game went to overtime and Arizona won on a 52-yard run by LaRod Stephens-Howling.
Oakland Raiders Running Game
13 of 15I thought Michael Bush and company could offset the fact that Darren McFadden did not play.
Tell that to the Oakland offense.
Better yet, tell that to the Miami Dolphins defense, because they weren't having any of that Sunday.
The score, 34-14, really wasn't indicative of how poorly the running game and the Oakland offense played.
Christian Ponder, Minnesota Vikings
14 of 15While I gave him much love for nearly throwing for 400 yards against the Broncos, the rookie quarterback did throw the interception in the closing moments of the game that led to the Broncos kicking the game-winning field goal with no time on the clock.
Ponder is developing into a solid NFL quarterback, but he needs to avoid those kinds of costly mistakes.
Washington Redskins
15 of 15They are just playing out the string.
Rex Grossman is not the answer.
John Beck is not the answer.
And Roy Helu is a gamer who is playing on an awful team.
