NFL: Is Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Tom Brady Having the Best Season so Far?
Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady are playing the quarterback position so well, it's almost unfair to opposing defenses. Not only are they putting up ridiculous statistics, but they are winning handily while doing so.
It's easy to see why the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers are three of the best teams in the NFL with these three superstar quarterbacks leading them. So who is having the best season between the three?
Let's take an in-depth look to find out whether Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees is having the best 2011 season.
Winning
1 of 6Through 12 weeks, here are the teams' win-loss records for Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees:
Rodgers: 11-0
Brady: 8-3
Brees: 8-3
This is a rather obvious point here. Rodgers is having the best season of the three as far as winning goes. He's already beat Brees head-to-head, and three more wins will give him more than any of the other quarterbacks on this list.
Statistically
2 of 6Here are the statistics through 11 games for Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady:
Rodgers: 326 pass attempts, 3,475 yards, 71.8 completion percentage, 33 TDs, 4 INTs, 127.7 QB Rating
Brees: 460 pass attempts, 3,689 yards, 70.2 completion percentage, 27 TDs, 11 INTS, 103.6 QB Rating
Brady: 421 pass attempts, 3,627 yards, 65.8 completion percentage, 28 TDs, 10 INTs, 105.1 QB Rating
Statistics can sometimes be misleading. Just because Brees leads the NFL in passing yards, doesn't mean that he is having the best season statistically. As you can see, Rodgers has thrown the ball far less than either Brady or Brees. If you were to take his yards per attempt (9.6) and multiply that by the pass attempts of Brees, Rodgers would have 4,416 passing yards this season.
While these three quarterbacks are all close statistically, Rodgers is still having the best overall season, statistically-speaking. He leads the league in touchdowns, completion percentage and quarterback rating and he has the fewest number of interceptions on the season.
Leadership
3 of 6This was the hardest category to pick a clear winner, because all three of these quarterbacks display fantastic leadership qualities to their respective teams. All three are the faces of their franchises, and Drew Brees, Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers do not bring any negativity to the sidelines.
However, if I had to choose just one to lead my team, I would have to go with Brees for one reason. That reason is that he has been a leader to the entire city of New Orleans, not just a football team. Following the tragedies of Hurricane Katrina, Brees was vital to the restoration of the city of New Orleans.
While that was a few years ago, that type of leadership doesn't simply leave an individual. That type of leadership stays with someone, and grows stronger with each year that passes. That's why I'm taking Brees as the best of the bunch as far as leadership goes this year.
Most with Least
4 of 6When you look at what Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees have to work with as far as weapons, it's almost unfair to Tom Brady.
With guys like Greg Jennings, Marques Colston, Jordy Nelson, Lance Moore, Jermichael Finley, Jeremy Graham and more all at their disposal. It's easy to see how they could have such potent offenses.
However, when you look at who Brady has to throw to (Wes Welker, Deion Branch and Rob Gronkowski), you can clearly see that Brady is the one who is doing the most with the least this season.
In fact, it seems that every year Brady does the most with the least, and this year is no different.
Historically
5 of 6On a historical level, Aaron Rodgers is having one of the finest seasons for a quarterback ever.
It's better than Dan Marino's 1984 season and it's better than Tom Brady's 2007 season. Rodgers is playing at such an elite level that even Brady gave him the highest of reviews.
Should Rodgers keep on his current pace, it is very likely that this season will go down in the record books as the best season by a quarterback in NFL history. That is especially true if the Green Bay Packers finish the regular season undefeated and win the Super Bowl.
Conclusion
6 of 6This year, Aaron Rodgers is clearly having the best season. Yep, even better than Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
It's not just the statistics or the fact that he has won every time he steps on the field. It's the entire package for Rodgers. There simply isn't anything that this man can do wrong right now.
If you haven't had the opportunity to watch him play this year, I suggest you do; because if you don't, you will miss out on a piece of history.
