2011 Bowl Projections: Non-BCS Bowl Matchups That Would Be Must-See TV

Kyle VassaloDec 2, 2011

Everyone is gaga over the BCS Bowl games, but there are non-BCS Bowl matchups that are going to present us with thrilling showdowns between marquee teams.

Snoring through an LSU vs. Alabama rematch is all well and good, but it's not the only Bowl game you should have your sights set on.

Here are a few non-BCS matchups that would blow spectators away.

Cotton Bowl: Kansas State vs. Georgia

If Georgia takes down LSU, they're headed to the Sugar Bowl. A more likely scenario will have them squaring off in the Cotton Bowl with Kansas State.

Collin Klein has led the Wildcats to nine wins this season against a brutal Big 12 schedule, and odds are that Kansas State will come into their bowl with 10 wins.

Georgia already has 10 wins and is an established SEC juggernaut. Watching two teams of this caliber from powerful conferences take on one another would dwarf the excitement of many BCS Bowls. Michigan and Houston in the Sugar Bowl wouldn't touch this matchup.

Outback Bowl: Michigan State vs. South Carolina

Michigan State has wins over Wisconsin and Michigan. Their scoring defense ranks sixth in the nation, allowing 15.4 PPG. While the Spartans have two devastating losses to their name, they are still one of the scariest teams in the nation.

South Carolina would be the perfect opponent for the Spartans. Marcus Lattimore went down, but a blowout win over Clemson proved they are still legitimate.

Here again, we see a matchup between two 10-win teams. This will be a defensive struggle, but don't count on this one being made up of solely field goals, like 'Bama and LSU's first go-around.

Capital One Bowl: Nebraska vs. Arkansas

Arkansas is the quietest elite team in the nation. They may have lost to No. 1 LSU and missed out on an opportunity to play their way into the BCS Title Game, but that doesn't mean they can't make a huge statement in their bowl game.

Arkansas has only two losses, which just so happen to be against the teams who will be squaring off in the BCS Title Game. Still, some remain unconvinced.

Taylor Martinez and Rex Burkhead make Nebraska exciting no matter who they are playing. This inevitable shootout would force people to recognize the winner as a legitimate team.
