Jaguars vs. Chargers: 9 Things to Watch During Monday Night's Game

David LevinDec 2, 2011

This could be the biggest game in the history of Jacksonville Jaguars football.

Throw out the first ever game played at the stadium. Throw out 62-7, and the day the team retired Dan Marino.

This game, against the San Diego Chargers, could speak volumes about this team's future in the 2011 season and beyond.

No pressure, just stating facts.

So much has changed this past week in Jacksonville (it seems like something changes every week, doesn't it?), and the tempo, momentum and overall outlook of the team has done a 180.

So many questions are left unanswered this week, and the only way to find those answers is to see a product on the field.

And San Diego is not the juggernaut it used to be and has its own issues to deal with.

Could this be two mirror-image teams playing out the string and looking toward 2012 with two lame-duck coaches, one of which one was already fired?

Only the field can decide those issues.

How Will the Team React to the Changes?

1 of 9

Everything could be viewed as new.

And we shall see what the players do to come out and show they too have changed.

The culture with the team has to be improved.

In this case, there is addition by subtraction.

What Will Mel Tucker Be Like as the Point Man?

2 of 9

Mel Tucker has no head coaching experience, but his command of this defense has allowed him the opportunity to make the transition.

Tucker will still oversee the defense, but now he must oversee everything and make sure the ship is running on all cylinders.

He will rely heavily on his assistant coaches.

Does the Offense Change Any?

3 of 9

Tucker's first job on the job was to make coaching changes.

Will he give Dirk Koetter the keys to the offense and let everyone have a shot at making plays, or will we see stagnation?

This has been the problem all season with this team.

Can they score more than 17 points in a contest?

Does the Defense Change Because Tucker Has More Responsibilities?

4 of 9

Will the defense that has played exceptional ball all season regress now that Tucker is in charge?

It can be said that some teams lose momentum when changes are made like this. The Jaguars defense was the only unit that had any momentum this season that mattered. The running game has been consistent, but it has not blown up.

The defense has kept this team in ballgames.

How Will Blaine Gabbert Play?

5 of 9

Does having a new head coach help or hurt Gabbert?

He will be learning a new offense next season, so he will be going through what amounts to another rookie season.

Can he withstand the pressure and be the passer everyone needs him to be?

Will he look more poised and confident in the pocket?

Could we finally see a 250-yard game from him?

Will This Be Another MNF Showcase?

6 of 9

The Jaguars were big underdogs against the Ravens. They won the game.

This time they are on MNF against a reeling Chargers team.

Can they put everything together this time and win again, but by a wider margin?

Will Maurice Jones-Drew Be Affected by Del Rio Being Fired?

7 of 9

The leading runner in the AFC has said he and his team let Del Rio down.

I personally do not see it that way.

Jones-Drew was a big advocate of Del Rio's style of coaching and the fact he was a "big brother" as much as a coach. But being a brother does not make a stern football team.

Does Jones-Drew finally have a 150-yard performance?

Will the Game Sell Out?

8 of 9

Fans have wanted Del Rio out since two years ago. Ticket sales have been average this year although the team has not been blacked out.

Will the stadium be full and will Wayne Weaver have to buy the remaining tickets to have the sellout?

Hopefully with all the changes, the city will want to see the "new" product.

How Will Dirk Koetter React?

9 of 9

He was thrown under the bus so many times this season.

Can Koetter get Gabbert to play like a pro?

Can the receivers play like they belong in the NFL?

Can anyone score more than 17 points?

All of this rests on the offensive coordinator's shoulders.
