Heath Bell Miami Marlins: Signing Pitcher Pushes Marlins Closer to Contending

Eric BowmanDec 2, 2011

The Miami Marlins continue to endure many changes in the organization, and the addition of Heath Bell is the first of what the franchise hopes will be many great moves this offseason to strengthen its chances of competing in the National League East.

They changed the team name, logo, uniforms and brought in a new coach. Now, the Marlins are making it known they intend to be heavy hitters in the free-agent market this winter.

They're after some big-name stars, and they finally landed what they hope will be the first of several great signings.

ESPN's Jayson Stark first reported the news on Twitter, and it's definitely one that should excite the Marlins' fanbase.

He later added that deal is expected to include a vesting option for a fourth year. Bell gives Miami a closer that will not falter in clutch moments, which is something the team desperately needed.

The 34-year-old closer is one of the best in the league, and his presence with the Marlins will be greatly welcomed. Stark tweeted just how good Bell has been in recent years.

This is an excellent pickup for Miami, and if the Marlins are smart, they will keep pursuing some of the top stars still on the market.

The Marlins started off strong last season, but they fizzled late and finished the year in last place, 30 games back from the NL East champs.

They had to get better in the offseason, and they're taking the right steps towards contending in the division now.

According to Stark's column, the Marlins are also after guys like Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols, Mark Buehrle and C.J. Wilson. If they landed at least one of those players, they would easily be considered a legit threat towards the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves.

With Ozzie Guillen as their head coach, the Marlins can start to make a name for themselves, but they have to continue to boost their roster. They're on the right track by signing Bell, as he will be able to help Miami win those close games.

As the winter meetings draw near, the Marlins are certainly a team to keep an eye on. They have big aspirations, and if they make a huge splash this offseason, they could give the NL East a run for its money.
