Week 13 Start Em Sit Em: Philip Rivers and Others To Bench

Chris TrapassoDec 1, 2011

No time for messing around in your fantasy football league with the playoffs on the horizon.

Chances are you're looking to lock up a top spot or are fighting to sneak into the postseason.

These guys must be on your bench during Week 13's action.

One former "must-start," an injury replacement and a boom-or-bust wideout with a bad matchup.

Philip Rivers

1 of 3

Rivers was once a fantasy football god and a must-start every week. Not this season. He turns the ball over far too often and hasn't reached the 300-yard plateau since the November 6th shootout against the Packers.

You may be tempted to give Rivers one final chance against the Jacksonville, but actually the 3-8 Jaguars are the No. 6-ranked team against fantasy quarterbacks in 2011 and allow less than 185 yards through the air per game.

Don't start him.

Toby Gerhart

2 of 3

Many fantasy owners rushed to the waiver wire when Adrian Peterson went down with an ankle injury two weeks ago. Gerhart's matchup against the Falcons wasn't the greatest, but it seemed likely he'd get a good deal of goal line carries.

Turns out, the Vikings were more willing to give Percy Harvin the ball inside the 5-yard line.

Odd.

This week he faces a Broncos run defense that's been surprisingly stout during the Tim Tebow era.

I wouldn't start him this week.

Too much potential to flop once again.

Anquan Boldin

3 of 3

The Ravens should beat the Browns, but it won't be easy, largely due to Cleveland's stellar secondary. They've got the best pass defense in the league (allowing 174.7 yards per game), and Joe Haden has emerged as a legitimate shutdown corner.

But the Browns are ranked 29th against the run.

Time to feed Ray Rice.

It's likely Haden will shadow Boldin all afternoon. Do you have faith in Joe Flacco getting Boldin the ball against a great cover man?

If you do, go ahead and start Boldin.

I'm not.

If anything, he's a WR No. 3 this week.
