Bobby Valentine to Boston: 5 Reasons It's a Good Move by Red Sox

Brian RoachDec 1, 2011

Bobby Valentine may be one of the most smug personalities in the MLB, but the Boston Red Sox will officially announce him as the 45th manager of the team at 5:30 p.m. ET on December 1. This is great for the Sox as they need someone who can control all the big egos on the team as well as be able to voice his opinion to the higher-ups.

There has been grumbling over the hiring of Valentine, but the Red Sox players need to know why Valentine is a perfect fit. There are five big reasons why he is a a good fit.

Valentine's Presence

1 of 5

Valentine makes his presence known wherever he goes and actually got fired from the New York Mets in 2002 for saying some bad things to the team management and even some players.

This is exactly what the Red Sox need to run the team when they are on the field. They need Valentine to show up every day and demand his team put their hearts on the field when they play every game. Valentine will be a force in the dugout and clubhouse, and the players will show him respect as their manager.

Valentine's History

2 of 5

Valentine is 1,117-1,072 in his career as a manger and won the NL pennant in 2000. He may have only two 90-plus-win seasons, but he has at least managed in a big market (New York Mets).

His ability to control players is astounding and his history as a manager and ESPN analyst is one that should make every Red Sox fan giddy with delight when they see him manage on a daily basis.

No More Beer/Fried Chicken

3 of 5

Josh Beckett is supposedly the key guy to "chicken gate," but Valentine will want to get all the Red Sox 2011 drama out of his mind before the 2012 season.

Valentine will want Beckett, Jon Lester and John Lackey to be in the dugout for every game and to avoid sitting in the clubhouse on their days off. He will try to remove the beer from the clubhouse and order them to never eat Popeye's ever again nor eat it in the clubhouse. This kind of behavior should not happen on a professional baseball team, especially in a big market such as Boston.

Heated Rivalries

4 of 5

Valentine was a huge part of the Mets-Phillies rivalry in the NL East and now he will be an even bigger part of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry starting in 2012.

The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is one of the best in all of sports and having Valentine as part of this rivalry is something that will be fun to watch. We will see ejections, yelling and maybe even some fights brought upon in the renewed rivalry.

The Red Sox need to have some fights in order to show other teams that they mean business.

Playoffs

5 of 5

With Bobby Valentine, the Red Sox will make the playoffs in 2012. There is no doubt in my mind that the Sox have talent, but the way they just collapsed in 2011 shows that the talent can only take them so far.

The Sox need Valentine to whip them into shape and get them craving another postseason run in 2012. The Sox will make it into the playoffs and could possibly make it to the World Series. They have a long way to go, but Sox Nation should believe in Valentine to be the next great manager in Sox history.
