NBA Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard's Absurd Demands Make Him Impossible to Move

Eric BallDec 1, 2011

Dwight Howard is turning into that high maintenance girlfriend that is impossible to please, but you put up with it anyway.

With a girl it’s because of her good looks and body, with Howard it’s because of his…body as well. Nobody in the league is 6'11" and 265 pounds with the broad shoulders and ridiculous muscles of Howard.

That’s why he is secretly giving out some high demands if he were to be traded by G.M Otis Smith and the Orlando Magic.

He wants to win a championship (big surprise), in a big market (ditto), in a city with warm weather (even though he plays an indoor sport).

So basically, he is trying to demand what every player in the NBA is currently seeking. The championship contender demand axes out most of the league, with the big market request killing Oklahoma City, Denver, San Antonio and Portland.

That leaves the Heat (no way), the Mavericks (can’t afford him) and last but not least the LA Lakers.

We have a winner!

But can the Lakers swing a deal?

With the way last season ended, Andrew Bynum isn’t untouchable like he once was. I’d assume he would be the vocal point in any deal involving Howard because of his age (24). The Lakers can’t offer a whole lot in terms of draft picks considering they usually have one of the last picks in the first round every season.

Lamar Odom is a potential piece, but his $11M salary would make it awfully hard for the Magic to abide with the new cap rules. The Lakers would have to take on the contract of Gilbert Arenas, the man with currently the worst contract in the entire league. Are the Lakers, with the stricter luxury tax rules now in place, willing to take on two monster contracts in addition to Kobe Bryant’s?

Highly unlikely.

Pau Gasol is another option but again would inflate the Orlando cap too much. It’s hard to paint a scenario where Howard ends up in purple and gold.

There are plenty of teams like the Clippers and Nets that would move a mountain in order to acquire him.

But until Howard loses some of his demands, he’s stuck in the Sunshine State.
