Cotto vs. Margarito: Expect Cotto to Target Margarito's Eye in Grudge Match

Ryan RudnanskyDec 1, 2011

Boxing can be a very unforgiving sport.

If you have a weakness, that weakness can be exposed in the form of a battered face or body.

That's why we should expect nothing less than to see Miguel Cotto target rival Antonio Margarito's right eye on Saturday, the same eye that was a bloody mess by the time Manny Pacquiao got done with it in November 2010.

After Pacquiao's unanimous decision victory over Margarito, Margarito was found to have a fractured orbital bone. He ended up having surgery on it, replacing a cataract with an artificial lens.

After that fight, the 33-year-old Margarito considered retirement, but after talking with doctors he decided to stay in the ring. He now says he's 100 percent leading up to the Cotto fight.

He better be 100 percent if he expects to survive this war. Not only is Cotto a very accomplished fighter (36-2, 29 KOs), he's still fuming over his last fight with Margarito in 2008. Cotto, who was the No. 1 welterweight in the world at the time, fell to Margarito that day, and consequently fell in the rankings. In Margarito's next fight against Shane Mosley, it was discovered he had a substance in his hand wraps, which ended up being a substance resembling the dangerous (and illegal) "plaster of Paris."

Since then, Cotto has contended Margarito cheated in their 2008 slugfest, which ended via 11th-round TKO.

Cotto won't just be a fighter looking for a weakness on Saturday, he simply doesn't like Margarito. That tends to produce some pretty brutal affairs.

"He can punch me in the eye. It's not going to do any damage," Margarito said in a news conference on Wednesday, via The Wall Street Journal.

Margarito already knows where Cotto will be aiming at Madison Square Garden.
