John Morrison: WWE's Curious Booking of John Morrison

T. SchaeferNov 29, 2011

Last Night's Raw broadcast was unusual for a number of reasons. The primary one being the fact they managed to string two good shows back to back for the Red brand after a series of disappointing episodes.

One of the most interesting cases was how they treated John Morrison's final match in the WWE. Initially, it seemed he was supposed to be destroyed by Brodus Clay. Even Clay mentioned as much on twitter.

Per the usual course, the show underwent a number of re-writes until they settled on The Miz vs. John Morrison.

In my own thinking, this is a better way to deal with Morrison's last match. It gives him the dignity of being sent off by his former Tag Team partner whom he spent his formative years with in the WWE.

In Morrison's final match, he came out all smiles. As he was about to do his dramatic "Slow Mo" pose, The Miz jumped him from behind and beat the hell out Morrison's leg with a pipe. As the trainers came out to check on Morrison, that should have ended it.

But that wouldn't be the case. Morrison got up under his own will and fought to continue the "Falls Count Anywhere" match. This was utterly surprising. What was even weirder was the fact that Morrison got a surprising amount of offense.

The match ended after The Miz nailed a Skull Crushing Finale on the steel ramp which knocked Morrison out. The Miz cut a great promo afterwards and gave something of a vacant look.

The rumors for months have been that the WWE and Morrison mutually wanted to "divorce" one another and were simply waiting for Morrison's contract to end. Morrison's turbulent six months have seen him taking pins from every opponent he'd be given.

He was given a US Title shot at Survivor Series against Dolph Ziggler, but was pinned as well.

The rumored causes of Morrison's "Swan Song" with the WWE have been numerous. Whether it is his relationship with Melina or wanting to pursue an acting career is really irrelevant. Whatever the reason, the WWE left the door open for Morrison to return.

Morrison's last match wasn't entirely a squash. Morrison showed a lot of courage and heart last night, which is usual for a guy as deep in the doghouse as he was. Other characters, such as Kozlov and Khali, weren't given that dignity.

What it comes down to is that if they were hellbent on never re-signing Morrison, they simply would have fed him to Clay and been done with it. Based on his booking last night, it seems the rumors could be far off base form the actual reality of the situation.

In regards to the possibility of Morrison returning to the WWE, this seems like a long shot. However, Morrison was given the opportunity. Jericho was written off TV after taking a punt to the head courtesy of Orton.

Jericho has also been the subject of a ton of rumors regarding his return as well.

Whether Morrison simply wants to do other things or is just taking a sabbatical is unknown. Whatever Morrison does, I wish him well and hope to see him again on WWE TV soon.
