The Miz Should Fight CM Punk for a Second WWE Title Run

Tony DolemiteNov 27, 2011

The more I write and submit articles here, the more comfortable I get playing Devil's Advocate. I am more than willing to take on this role depending on how strongly I feel about the subject matter. I also welcome debate because it means I have hit a nerve, which is my intention. Keeping that in mind, although it has been a week now, I still can't help but think about the 2011 Survivor Series. One reason is because it was the first time in a long time that I had been to a pay per view event (WrestleMania X, anybody) and because it was one of the biggest ones of the year. I think we all wanted to see this one in hopes of the WWE giving us a preview as to what we could expect to see between now and WrestleMania 28. Whatever reason you actually attended, it was nothing less than spectacular!

I think it's safe to say the number one attraction of the event was The Rock. We couldn't wait to see him turn up the heat in his rivalry with John Cena a few notches. That much mattered to me.There was also the anticipated match they were going to have with the Awesome Truth, R-Truth and former WWE Champion and resident bad boy, The Miz. Notice how I included former WWE Champion leading into my introduction of The Miz.

Because it has been awhile since the Miz was champion, I think it has been easy for the fans to forget that this young man surpassed expectations, not only winning the big one but being a breath of fresh air for fans tired of the same old same old. He has been nothing more than a workhorse.

The Miz was the second reason why I decided to attend the Survivor Series. I wanted to see if he could hang with the legend and he did. Miz held his own in the main event at Survivor Series. He definitely saw more love from the Madison Square Garden fans than John Cena. He deserved to be there. Honestly, maybe Cena and Truth should have stayed home leaving us with The Rock vs. The Miz as the main event. I wouldn't mind seeing Miz take on The Rock one on one at some point next year. This match would be more anticipated than Rock vs. Cena.

Funny how things change. No one ever expected The Miz to enjoy any real success in the business considering his background. A former reality television star, Miz was determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a sports entertainer. At first Miz was dismissed, because let's face it, he was mediocre at best. Not exactly a champion in the making and not really impressive enough to label him a future superstar. However, because I remembered watching this kid when he was on The Real World, I decided to stick it out with him. You can never tell about some people. That was 2004.

Now it's 2011 and the "kid" has a WWE title to his resume, not to mention being a 2010 Money in the Bank winner, a two time United States Champion, a three time WWE Tag Team Champion, as well as the winner of other championships and accolades. I don't know what this tells you, but it tells me that the WWE sees money in this guy—that and another title run. From what I have been reading lately, The Miz is being primed for another program involving the title and its current holder, CM Punk. On paper this appears to be a mismatch. CM Punk can out wrestle Miz, period! As we all know this simply isn't about sports, it is also about the entertainment. Under the right circumstances, Miz can beat Punk and make the next few months more than interesting.

Punk can also give Miz the credibility he lacked during his first run as champion. When the biggest threat to your title is a man in his sixties, even if he is Jerry "The King" Lawler, you will certainly have trouble being recognized as great. One title run will not cut it, even if you have victories over big stars like Randy Orton and John Cena whom the fans continue to see as overrated.

The Miz is a talent that should not be wasted. He can bring a lot to any match, especially, when it's for the title. Throw in Punk and a main event spot at WrestleMania and you've got gold. Any time you put the title on him it will mean something because he is special. WWE I beg of you, please give The Miz another title run more memorable than the first. You know, something to justify his greatness and something for us to believe in. Awesome indeed!
