WWE: Is CM Punk More over Than the Rock Among Regular Viewers?

The Doctor Chris MuellerNov 26, 2011

The current WWE champion CM Punk is one of WWE's most valuable assets and truly a star on the rise in the industry.

Punk took the next step into fell fledged main event status when he delivered a promo which set the Internet ablaze with speculation that he had gone mad.

With Punk being WWE's newest poster boy, one has to wonder if the regular WWE viewers find Punk or The Rock more interesting?

The Rock is a legend in the business who accomplished more than most in less time than almost anybody who has done as much.

There is no denying the appeal and popularity of the great one, but are the viewers who tune in every week as taken with Rocky as the fans who have come back after hearing he is competing again?

Fans who have not kept up with the product will undoubtedly be more interested in The Rock because he is more established than Punk with that group of fans.

The regular fans, however, could go either way. While many of the people who have wanted Rocky back in the ring have cheered him til they lost their voice, some would rather see the WWE's current workhorses get the glory and not someone who left the business.

Some fans have actually turned against Rock due to the fact that he is coming in and taking main event spots while not doing nearly as much work as those who have worked for years since Rocky left.

I can understand that position, Rocky left for Hollywood without looking back, and now we are supposed to stand up and cheer him as if he is some kind of savior.

Punk is being billed as a savior by some because he is helping certain superstars get exposure who didn't have as much before, like Zack Ryder.

I will not try and say that Punk is better than the Rock, more popular or even more entertaining, but what I will posit is that he may be more over with the current audience.

Rocky evokes a sense of nostalgia in fans who miss the attitude era, but Punk makes people think of what the WWE could be, instead of focusing on what it was and never will be again.

Not everyone loves Punk, either. Some people have found his new direction to be cocky and undeserved, and considering he was not the talk of the town before that stellar promo, I can see why they think that way.

Punk is an amazing talent who could keep WWE interesting for years to come, which is one of the reasons I would say that when it comes to the faithful audience who tune in for every show, Punk is more over.

Rocky can bring in fans who have not watched in years without even breaking a sweat, but Punk can make those fans stay for the rest of the show.

I know not everyone, maybe even most people, will disagree with me, but that is what good debate is all about.

Unfortunately, there is really no way to measure who is, in fact, more over, but we can give reasons and opinions for our positions.

What do you think, is Punk more over with the current audience than Rocky?
