Movember: NHL's Best Hockey Mustaches Ranked for November 2011

That frightening thing you see in the title picture is called Lanny McDonald's mustache.

While no NHL player comes close to having a forest of hair growing underneath his nose like McDonald, many players came through during Movember 2011.

NHL players who grew a mustache this past month did so in order to grow awareness and raise funds for male cancer. According to Movember United States, "these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men."

The actual appearance of these 'staches are rather insignificant in relation to the supported cause, but taking a look at them is still an entertaining experience.

15. Jonas Hiller

Jonas Hiller's facial hair is not much to be impressed by, but he makes the countdown for the customized goalie mask seen here.

It features the profile picture of the Anaheim Ducks' players, photoshopped with mustaches of course.

14. Tim Thomas

Tim Thomas has been sporting an impressive mustache since shaving his playoff beard in the summer.

Like Hiller, he donned a special mask for the month. The mask is to be raffled off, with proceeds going to the Tim Thomas Foundation.

13. Paul Bissonnette

Paul Bissonnette posted this picture of his own mustache on his Twitter account.

12. Scott Hartnell

Hartnell's interesting hair-growing history left him a prime candidate for excelling in a month dedicated to just that.

11. Jody Shelley

Jody Shelley's clean and well-trimmed handlebar 'stache is an appropriate look for an NHL enforcer.

10. Nate Thompson

A similar 'stache to Shelley's, but Nate Thompson's is squarely-shaped instead of curved.

9. Derek MacKenzie

Not many Blue Jackets have been doing well at hockey lately, but MacKenzie has done just fine at growing a handlebar.

8. Jaromir Jagr

Jaromir Jagr's 'stache has been turning into a full beard as of late, but the initial efforts were something to be proud of.

7. Shawn Thornton

The enforcer of the Boston Bruins, Shawn Thornton's handlebar 'stache gets thicker as it goes towards his chin. The look is fitting for one of the NHL's best fighters.

6. John Scott

John Scott appears 21 seconds into the video.

This thick 'stache is almost as scary looking as the 6' 8" 270-pound enforcer who grew it.

5. George Parros

George Parros had his trademark mustache shaved off before this month, making him unrecognizable.

(His Twitter handle being "Stache16" should tell you how popular that section of his anatomy is.)

It came back quickly.

4. Cal Clutterbuck

Cal Clutterbuck's stache has its own Twitter account.

3. Benn Ferriero

A member of the San Jose Sharks, Ferriero's efforts resulted in this messy behemoth.

Check the 0:29 mark of this Canadiens' Movember video. What Erik Cole has on his face is downright scary.

1. Claude Giroux

This thing just came out of nowhere.

In June 2010, Giroux's playoff beard showed no indication that the young superstar would be capable of producing Movember 2011's best mustache.

Maybe he used miracle grow this past month.

Whatever he did, it resulted in a 'stache that is so perfect it seems fake at first glance.
