UConn Basketball: 3 Reasons Why Central Florida Upset the Huskies

Doug BrodessNov 25, 2011

Central Florida pulled off the biggest upset of the 2011-12 college basketball season by beating UConn 68-63 in the Bahamas.

Marcus Jordan rang up 20 points (making all six of his free-throw attempts), grabbed seven rebounds and handed out seven assists.

An early-season loss is not the end of the world but it does prove that Jim Calhoun's Huskies are far from invincible.

Here are three key reasons why Connecticut lost to UCF, aspects that need to be addressed so that something like this doesn't happen again soon.

UConn Shot 11.1 Percent from Beyond the Arc

1 of 4

The Huskies shot 2-for-18 from downtown.

Shabazz Napier, who had shot 46.7 percent going into the game, missed all four of his shots from beyond the arc.

Jeremy Lamb (pictured), the Huskies' top scorer, was the only player who made a three, shooting 2-for-9.

Regardless of what else you do, it's hard to beat anyone when you shoot that poorly.

The Huskies Only Forced 7 Turnovers

Not to minimize the good job that the Knights did in taking care of the ball, but UConn has the athletes to apply a ferocious amount of defensive pressure on the ball.

The Huskies blocked 10 shots, which shows that their perimeter defenders can get in their opponents' shots and lock them down without fear of what will happen if their man beats them off the dribble.

The Huskies Gave Away a 17-Point Lead

3 of 4

Good teams put their opponents away.

At 15:27 to go in the second half, UConn was up 17 points.

That's when UCF went to work, going on a 19-5 run.

In fact, the Huskies only made six more FGs in the remainder of the game, with Andre Drummond (pictured) scoring three of them.

Lamb made one three-point basket and Napier was scoreless during this time period.

Conclusion

4 of 4

In the grand scheme of the 2011-12 season, this loss does not mean much.

A single defeat in college basketball, unlike college football, doesn't hurt your standing significantly.

The more important matter is how the defending NCAA champs respond to this.

Do they learn and get back to work or do they blow it off and let these issues go unaddressed?
