2012 NFL Mock Draft: Latest Stock Watch for College Football's Top QBs

John RozumNov 21, 2011

For those who watch both pro and college football to an extreme extent, you will have noticed that this past weekend of college football was off-the-hook insane.

Four teams ranked in the BCS Top 10 dropped, and the QB play is a significant contributor to that, especially since college football is becoming more pro-style in terms of the types of offenses.

And with the 2012 NFL Draft being offense-oriented, here is a quick stock watch for five of the better QBs.

Andrew Luck (Stanford), Stock: No Change

1 of 5

Stanford's Andrew Luck may have had a down game against Oregon, but he's still going to be the No. 1 overall pick barring a major injury.

That said, Luck has completed over 70 percent of his passes for a second consecutive season, this coming after losing his two top targets (Doug Baldwin, Ryan Whalen) to the NFL draft last spring.

So, in reality, Luck may have similar numbers, but he's doing it with much less talent.

And being that Andrew Luck is considered one of the smarter players in college football, replacing him in due time with Peyton Manning will do wonders for the Indianapolis Colts and their complex offensive scheme.

Not to mention, Luck was slated to be the No. 1 overall pick in 2011, so there's no way he doesn't go No. 1 overall in 2012.

Matt Barkley (USC), Stock: Increased

2 of 5

Southern California QB Matt Barkley's stock is rising fast after winning this past weekend over the Oregon Ducks.

In that game, Barkley threw four TDs to just one pick (on the road) and compiled 323 yards on 26 completions. For the year, Barkley has 33 TDs to just seven INTs and has completed over 67 percent of his passes.

The downside, however, is that we're only going to see Barkley once more this season, as the Trojans are still ineligible from bowl season. Therefore, although his stock is now up, it may fall a bit before the draft.

Thing is, Barkley has one year of eligibility left, so being that USC is getting its NCAA bowl ban lifted next season, he may come back for a shot to compete for a conference/national title.

Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Stock: Decreased

3 of 5

It was the first time it happened all year; Oklahoma QB Landry Jones failed to throw one TD pass in a game.

Jones did, however, throw one INT. Not surprisingly, the Sooners lost their road game to Baylor, 45-38.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but this was also the first time that Oklahoma had ever lost to Baylor. And the fact that Jones failed to throw a TD shows just how much he's missing WR Ryan Broyles.

2011 was expected to be a national-title season for the Sooners, but after losing their second game (first to Texas Tech at home), national title hopes are gone and conference title hopes are slipping.

Luckily for Jones, Oklahoma still has two regular season games remaining, so he does have quite a bit of time to get his stock back up. Perhaps the Baylor game was just a quick bump in the road. Despite not throwing a TD and one pick, Jones did compile almost 450 yards on 36 completions.

We'll know a lot more about how legit Jones is within the next few weeks and during bowl season, but as for now, his stock has slightly fallen.

Robert Griffin (Baylor), Stock: Increased

4 of 5

An off-and-on Heisman candidate for much of the season (but mostly on), Baylor QB Robert Griffin III has been slithering through defenses like a hot knife through butter this season.

Only once, in the Bears' loss to Oklahoma State, did Griffin fail to throw more TDs than INTs. However, he quickly responded with a near perfect game the following week.

On the year, Griffin has 33 TD passes to just five picks, and he's also added five rushing TDs. Now include his 73 percent completion percentage, and it seems that Baylor may just have a Heisman Trophy winner in 2011.

A team not even needing a QB could use him, because not only would he add depth to the QB position, but with his athleticism and versatility, Griffin could also help as a slot WR.

In addition, it would not be surprising to see that offense incorporate a few option plays to keep the defense off balance.

Just keep a good eye on Griffin, though, because he is the real deal despite not having much talent around him.

Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State), Stock: Decreased

5 of 5

By season's end, Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden will have increased his TDs, yards and completion percentage total, but also his INT and times sacked numbers as well.

Being that Weeden is rather INT-prone in comparison to the rest of the group (five in his last three games), Weeden's issue is a tangible fix.

Better to have mechanical problems than needing an attitude adjustment, because through time, changing the throwing motion for the better is an easier and more football-related issue. On the year, Weeden has thrown 12 INTs, just one down from his 13 in 2011.

The question is whether he's the real deal.

With having some solid WRs like Dez Bryant a few years ago and now Justin Blackmon, how would Weeden fair with just average targets?

Well, we'll obviously find out more once he's in the NFL, but there's no denying that the potential is there.
