Survivor Series 2011: Why a Team Orton Win over Team Barrett Would Be Disastrous

Mike ChiariNov 20, 2011

Although it has truly been lost over the past several years, the very foundation of Survivor Series was built on the traditional elimination-style tag team match. While the WWE has gotten away from that format, there always seems to be at least one such match per year.

That will be the case on Sunday as Team Orton, which consists of Randy Orton, Mason Ryan, Sin Cara, Kofi Kingston and Sheamus, will take on Team Barrett, which features Wade Barrett, Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler and Hunico.

Both teams certainly have their strong points, but it would be an absolute blunder on the creative team’s part if Team Barrett doesn’t win, with Barrett doing the heavy lifting.

After months of doing absolutely nothing, Barrett has finally been afforded an opportunity to return to the main event scene. He has been on a major roll, which includes victories over the likes of Daniel Bryan and Orton.

With that in mind, it would be a real shame to ruin his push.

Orton has been pushed to the moon over the past several years, so he certainly won’t be missing out on anything if he loses this particular match. The creative team could certainly find a way to eliminate him from the match without making him look weak.

Many wrestlers have propelled their careers based on their performances in Survivor Series matches, including The Undertaker, The Rock and even Orton himself.

With that said, a huge showing from Barrett in which he makes several eliminations and is the sole survivor could go a long way in his establishment.

It isn’t all about Barrett, though, as essentially all of Team Barrett has more to gain than Team Orton. Rhodes has been buried in recent months by Orton and could use a strong showing, as could Ziggler, who seems to be on the verge of a run in the main event himself.

Orton’s team is full of guys who are made to look good on a regular basis, namely himself and Sheamus.

Sin Cara, Kingston and Ryan are all nothing more than mid-carders at best as they lack the requisite mic skills or charisma to rise any higher.

I think that the greater amount of talent as a whole resides on Team Barrett and all of them could use a nice rub over Team Orton. There are already two established main eventers on Team Orton, so a win wouldn’t help them that much, and a loss wouldn’t hurt in the least.

Barrett is exceedingly talented in terms of his in-ring skills and his mic work, and I think the creative team is finally starting to take notice. If they are truly committed to him, though, then Team Barrett will pick up a big win on Sunday.
