Is Tim Tebow More Valuable to the Denver Broncos or Your Fantasy Team?

Marco PatitucciNov 18, 2011

Tim Tebow continues to baffle and impress, often going from one to the other on consecutive plays. His passing game isn't pretty. He runs the ball like a Brandon Jacobs-sized Steve Young. And while the reactions to his play have been mixed, the results have been consistent.

Tebow has consistently added value to the Broncos and fantasy teams since his installation as the starting quarterback in Denver.

For fantasy football, Tim Tebow has been a viable option at quarterback for some time. He gives the production of a mid-level running back in the QB slot in addition to the points he accumulates in the passing game.

The rushing stats are the most important factor in Tim Tebow's value to your fantasy team. Averaging 70.2 rush yards per start, Tebow is offering seven points per week just in rush yards for standard scoring leagues. Projected to a 16-start NFL season, Tebow would amass over 1,100 yards rushing!

Adding Tebow's rushing TDs, he's getting 11-12 points per game for your fantasy team just on the ground.

Most QBs score rushing TDs on one-yard sneaks, but when you factor in Tebow's ability to take it to the house from even outside the red zone, you're looking at one helluva run-option at quarterback.

His passing stats aren't going to blow your socks off, but he's averaging more than a passing TD per start this season. When you add that to the rushing stats, you can see how Tebow is a top-10 QB in most fantasy leagues.

His value to the Denver Broncos comes from another set of stats.

In the NFL, the most important stat in the valuation of a quarterback is wins. The QBR stat may be an improvement on the old quarterback rating system, but it still isn't truly indicative of the value a quarterback has to a team.

With the average score being 50 on a scale to 100, is Tim Tebow's QBR of 35.1(29th) reflective of his value to his team?

The city of Denver would certainly say no.

Tebow is winning games for the Broncos and building buzz around Denver with his late-game heroics.

Perhaps more importantly, Tim Tebow does not turn the ball over. He has thrown one interception and lost one fumble this season. Obviously, the Broncos run an unconventional offense that has been set up to highlight Tebow's strengths; but it only works because he maintains control of the football. And he has the football in his hands a lot.

Tebow is a unique talent, but one has to wonder how long he can maintain his health with the current level of abuse he is taking in this offensive style. The problem is: It's probably the only style he can win with right now.

In fantasy football, Tim Tebow's limitations lead to value in rushing yards. For the Broncos, those same limitations have left them with questions about the future of their quarterback.

While Tim Tebow is certainly valuable to the Broncos, is he a top-10 QB in the NFL like he is in fantasy?

The simple answer is no.

Tim Tebow could be a player that changes what an NFL quarterback looks like. Or, he could be the next Kordell Stewart. Either way, for now, Tebow has the most value as a fantasy quarterback.
