NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are in a Complete Tailspin

John FrielNov 15, 2011

At the worst time to start losing games, these once promising teams are on the verge of failing their fans by going into a complete tailspin to eliminate themselves from the postseason race.

While there still is time for these teams to get it together in time to possibly grasp one of the last playoff spots, they're going to need to make a huge turnaround in order to get it together in time for the most difficult postseason in sports.

Buffalo Bills

Starting the season 4-1 with key wins over the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, the Buffalo Bills appeared to be on their way to their first postseason appearance since 1999, with considerably strong offensive play from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, running back and MVP candidate Fred Jackson and wide receiver Stevie Johnson.

Since that dream start, however, the Bills have lost three of their past four games, with the past two losses to the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys coming by a combined 53 points. They've only scored 18 points in the past two games, have given up at least 23 points in all but two games this year and have seen a severe regression in their defense with both their rushing and passing defense ranked below 23rd.

They could bounce back with two games against Miami, but a game against the New York Jets and New England won't help the Bills' cause.

Philadelphia Eagles

So much for a dream team. The Philadelphia Eagles remind us more of the 2004 USA Team that went to the Olympics and got embarrassed by the likes of Puerto Rico than the 1992 team who failed to win a game by fewer than 35 points. Drawing comparisons to the Miami Heat and their big three, the Eagles won't have the honor of making it to the postseason after two consecutive losses.

It did appear for a few moments that the Eagles had gotten it together after a 34-7 victory over Dallas, but that was quickly dispelled of after a loss to the Chicago Bears and an embarrassing home loss to Arizona.

With Michael Vick and Jeremy Maclin now injured, the Eagles will be lucky to reach .500. They may actually lose 10-plus games considering that they still have matchups with New England, the New York Jets and Dallas.

Atlanta Falcons

Coach Mike Smith deserves all the praise in the world for what he has done with this Atlanta Falcons squad. But even Bill Belichick thinks that going for it on 4th-and-inches at your own 30-yard line in overtime is a bit of a bewildering move. The overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints was crippling, as it ended a three-game losing streak and put a stop to any talk of this team coming back to win the division.

The Falcons had won three previous games before that upsetting loss, but have yet to make a defining win with losses to Chicago, Green Bay, Tampa Bay and New Orleans. With only one win against a team with a record above .500, the Falcons aren't exactly proving that they're postseason ready.

With games against Houston, New Orleans and Tampa Bay coming up, the Falcons will have a lot on their plate to end the season.

Kansas City Chiefs

Starting out the season 0-3 and then reeling off four consecutive wins, the roller coaster ride of the Kansas City Chiefs season finally appeared to be going in the right direction after an emotional overtime win against the San Diego Chargers. Prior to that week, the Chiefs had shutout the Oakland Raiders by a score of 28-0.

Then they lost to the winless Miami Dolphins by 28 points and it all got ugly once again as the Chiefs began their tailspin once again. They went on to follow the loss to the Dolphins with an even uglier losing effort at the hands of the Denver Broncos, in a game where they surrendered two completions and still managed to find a way to lose.

The Chiefs' next three opponents? Chicago, New England and Pittsburgh. This could get ugly.

San Diego Chargers

One of the most inconsistent teams in the NFL with one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in Philip Rivers, the San Diego Chargers have just as good a chance to win the AFC West as any of the other three teams do. All three teams are separated by only one game, with the Chargers tied for second at 4-5.

The Chargers did start the season on the right foot by starting off 4-1, with the lone loss coming against the New England Patriots. They took advantage of the easy schedule, but have since lost the past four games with two of the losing efforts coming against divisional opponents.

The road to the AFC West title won't get any easier, as the Chargers look to take on Buffalo, Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit and Oakland.
