Kentucky vs. Kansas: Young Wildcats Will Prevail in Clash of Powerhouse Programs

Michael DixonNov 15, 2011

Before we get too far into any analysis, this matchup needs to be put into a little perspective.

Kansas and Kentucky play today. Two of the best programs of all time will line up in a game between two teams that will likely make deep NCAA Tournament runs in March.

Given what the last few weeks of sports news has brought us, and the fact that it doesn't seem likely that we'll be seeing the NBA for a long time, these two teams squaring off in the early college hoops season seem like just what the doctor ordered.

But enough of the fluffy stuff.

These are not only two of the best teams in the history of college basketball, but also two of the best going right now (Kentucky is No. 2, Kansas is No. 11 in both polls).

Now, can the Jayhawks win this game? Absolutely.

Will they? Kansas is certainly a good team, but at this point, Kentucky is just better.

Doron Lamb is a fantastic guard. He averaged just over 12 points a game in his freshman season last year. Tonight will be a nice coming out party for the sophomore.

When he fails or needs some help, his teammates will offer plenty. The player who I really like to be a dominant presence tonight is Anthony Davis.

While Kansas is certainly a far better team than Marist (whom Kentucky beat 108-58), Davis' 23-point, 10-rebound, five-block performance against the Red Foxes in the season opener was far too great to ignore.

No, I am not expecting him to be that good tonight, but he won't need to be.

Kentucky has a strong roster. As always, it's a loaded team; there's nothing new about that. But, obviously, the same is true for Kansas.

But, what Kentucky has is a great balance of an inside and outside presence. Kansas will not be able to focus on guarding the perimeter or the paint. Both will have to be dealt with.

Kansas certainly has the team to pull off an upset, but I like the Wildcats quite a bit more in this one.
