WWE Survivor Series 2011: WWE Has Destroyed The Rock's In-Ring Return

Adam WellsNov 15, 2011

When it was first announced that The Rock was going to be wrestling at Survivor Series, it is safe to say that there were a lot of people who were skeptical. WWE was building for a huge match between The Great One and John Cena at WrestleMania, so to have him work before that could be devastating. The buy rate for this show will be great, but the match he is in, quite frankly, lacks any momentum.

Last night, The Rock made his return to Raw after a seven month absence. He made two different appearances. The first was just a quick entrance and Rock Bottom to Mick Foley. The second was for a promo with The Miz and R-Truth, his Survivor Series opponents.

The promo was fine, but the way that the show ended, with Rock just giving the Rock Bottom to both Miz and Truth, killed any hope that there was to build momentum for the match.

This whole rivalry between these four was built on the unstoppable team of "Awesome Truth" needing to get theirs. Well, over the last three weeks, we have seen Miz get beat clean by Cena, Truth get laid out immediately after that match and now Rock has taken out Miz and Truth.

Where is the heat for this match? Is it all just between Cena and Rock? If that's the case, why not just have them wrestle right now? Or why bother putting Rock back in the ring right now?

The show should be entertaining and the buy rate will be huge because Rock is a true game changer, but his first match back should feel special. It should be something that you want to go out of your way to see.

Instead, it is just something that we are going to watch simply because Rock is involved. It feels like the least important main event tag team match ever.

Something special might happen at the end of the match – Cena turning on Rock? – but we should not want to see what might happen at the end of it all. We should want to see the match as a whole, and, unfortunately, we don't.

Rock deserved better than that after seven years out of the ring, and we deserved better than that because this should feel special and it doesn't.
