Hottest Sports Stories for Monday, Nov. 14

Gabe ZaldivarNov 13, 2011

Well, that weekend didn't suck. Manny Pacquiao got old, the Ducks slayed a Cardinal and Tim Tebow really is the rarest winner in all of football lore...we will explain.

Welcome to the Daily Radar, your only excuse to let your hair down and have a cordial on Monday. Leave your comments and I may send you a hug.

Let's Dish.

NBA PLAYERS AND OWNERS STILL CAN'T MAKE NICE

In a move that could signal the end of hope for an NBA season, the players have rejected the latest CBA proposal from the owners. The move was not unexpected since this offer was actually worse than the previous one that the players turned down two weeks ago.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Why do the NBA owners and players hate each other?

Our Take: The problem with this whole lockout has been that the owners don't want to budge on anything. They know what they want and they aren't go to change for anyone. That is their right, but they have force the players' hands in this whole scenario.

Things are bad with the NBA right now. There is no trust between the owners and players, which only adds to the drama behind the scenes. Whenever we think a deal is close, something happens that leads to it falling completely off track.

TAMPA BAY'S JEREMY HELLICKSON AND ATLANTA'S CRAIG KIMBREL GET HARDWARE

The Baseball Writers Association of America decided that they hate position players and named two pitchers Rookie of the Year. Hellickson had more competition than Kimbrel did, but, ultimately, both men did enough to impress the voters and give them a shiny trophy.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Did the BBWAA get this one right?

Our Take: Yes and no. Even though I don't like giving an overall performance award to a relief pitcher, Kimbrel was the best of a below-average bunch in the National League. Hellickson had great peripheral numbers, but Kansas City's Eric Hosmer or Seattle's Dustin Ackley were better choices.

Hype Meter: 4 out of 5 Craig Kimbrel Fastballs

Baseball awards' season is great, but considering that this year's rookie class did not have that one dominant player, this award takes a little bit of a hit. That is not to say there aren't great rookies in the class, but most of them did not have enough appearances to justify a full-season award.

EVEN MORE DISTURBING JERRY SANDUSKY FALLOUT

The scandal that has rocked Penn State keeps getting worse. Reports have surfaced that the judge who set Jerry Sandusky's bail was a volunteer for his charity organization, Second Mile. In addition to that bombshell, former head coach Joe Paterno's name has been taken off the Big Ten championship trophy.

Question on Everybody's Mind: How deep is this whole situation going to go?

Our Take: At this point, who knows. Everyday there is something that comes out to throw a wrinkle in this situation and it makes us cringe even more. You want it to stop, but it is like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole: It keeps getting worse.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Things That Make You Scratch Your Head

Where does this whole thing go from here? While it would be better for everyone involved if details stopped coming out, we have seen too much happen in the last week to expect that to be the case. The anger and venom that we felt last week will linger for a long time to come, it seems.

MANNY PACQUIAO IS APPARENTLY A CRUMMY BOXER

Manny Pacquiao beat Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday. That fact has millions of fans crying foul. I am just confused about all the controversy. A boxing fan by birth, even I admit professional boxing is just one step away from WWE silliness.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Is Floyd Mayweather a better boxer now?

Our Take: Perhaps. What I love is that this near loss guarantees a fight with Money May. Mayweather was sitting at home burning money and watching Pacquiao struggle. This is when Money May stopped making it rain into the fireplace and decided to finally box Pacquiao.

The real story is how boxing trounced the UFC on a hype perspective. I would comment on Dos Santos winning the heavyweight belt but I sneezed on Saturday night and missed it. Sure, boxing has its problems, but at least they don't have an out of touch Dana White chastising his own fans. Someone took one too many shots of testosterone.

BCS LOVES THEMSELVES SOME CUTE LITTLE DUCKIES

Saturday was like the opening weekend of March Madness, minus Dick Vitale screaming in my face. Giants fell, upsets abounded and last-minute scoring was pivotal. In the end, Stanford and Boise State gave us a week's worth of things to talk about.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Did BCS get this week right?

Our Take: After getting trounced by Oregon, I would have liked Stanford to get knocked from the top 10. What irks me is that Boise State gets top 10 love after becoming the one powerhouse that can't kick a field goal to save their lives. They are turning into Rube Baker trying to throw back to the pitcher in this regard.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Laces Outs

I heart the BCS, if only for the fact that fans take this so seriously. Oregon moves into the Top Five and millions of SEC and Big 12 fans' eyes began to explode, kind of like the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

TIM TEBOW FREAKING WINS ANOTHER GAME DOOMING US ALL

Somehow Tim Tebow managed to get another win under his belt by completing two passes on Sunday. That is two more than I completed sitting on my couch in my boxers. I am beginning to think I should attempt a football comeback, or wear pants while watching NFL action.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Is Tim Tebow a winner?

Our Take: Yes. I am done spending the last crucial cells in my brain on this question. The man seems destined to win no matter how he performs. Let him run all over the field and call him a quarterback for all I care. I am done...done, I tell ya.

Hype Meter: 4 out of 5 Wildcats

The only thing to get more hype than an awful Tebow is one that actually gets results. I may black out by Wednesday from banging my head on my desk.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS REPLACE TONY LA RUSSA WITH SOME GUY

One of the best managers in the history of the game will be replaced by Mike Matheny. I guess Todd Hundley and Henry Blanco were unable to be interviewed at this time.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Will Matheny be the answer in St. Louis?

Our Take: How the hell am I supposed to know? The man has been hired for being a hard worker and having the intangibles to succeed. It sounds to me like the Tim Tebow of coaching. Oh, well I guess he will be fine then.

PLAYERS PREPARE TO WIPE THEIR TUSHIES WITH NBA PROPOSAL

The players have been looking at this grand proposal that David Stern said was the best offer the players would get. An escrow portion assures owners a safety net for increased spending. You can get in-depth analysis from ESPN here

Question on Everybody's Mind: Will players accept offer?

Our Take: They shouldn't. The selfish part of me of course wants a quick resolution. However, we continue to forget that the owners are the same people that have given millions to guys like Darko Milicic and Eddy Curry. I'm fat and useless...pay me.
