WWE Network Concept: Mick Foley Should Host a Late Night Talk Show

The Doctor Chris MuellerNov 14, 2011

In the past few weeks I have been writing a lot about the upcoming WWE network because I find the whole thing very interesting.

WWE is attempting to do something risky by having their own channel, something a few sports have been successful at like golf and football.

There have been several polls posted on WWE.com asking for opinions from fans regarding ideas for new content for the network.

A divas reality show has been an idea thrown around as well as different kinds of recap and history shows. The one thing I think WWE should consider, which I have heard nothing about, is a talk show.

WWE has had in-house talk show segments for decades, and they are generally very popular with fans. Piper's Pit, The Barbershop and The Cutting Edge are just a couple of the more popular wrestler talk shows WWE has done.

These are not real talk shows, of course, as they are primarily used to further a feud or start a new angle, but I think WWE could be successful by having a legitimate late night talk show.

Mick Foley is the man who I think could helm this project. There are several reasons why I feel Foley would be good in this kind of role.

The first and probably most important reason is Mick Foley is funny. I don't know how many people have had an opportunity to listen to the man speak outside of a wrestling event, but he is well spoken, intelligent and humorous.

He has been doing some stand up comedy the last couple years and has said he really enjoys it. Most talk show hosts come from a comedy background, and Foley is probably the closest thing WWE has to a comedian.

Having Foley host a show similar to the Tonight Show would allow WWE to do two things; have their own stars appear more often in a non-wrestling role and integrate stars from other types of media into WWE programming.

It is no secret that numerous celebrities are fans of WWE. Freddie Prinze Jr. is a huge fan of WWE and an employee, and I read that Hugh Jackman freaked out backstage when he saw Steve "Brooklyn Brawler" Lombardi when he hosted.

Donald Trump even participated in the main event for WrestleMania by having Bobby Lashley face Umaga in a bet with Mr. McMahon.

Other celebrities who have shown WWE some love include Drew Carey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, ZZ Top singer Billy Gibbons, Snooki, Johnny Knoxville and Kim Kardashian.

Having these types of people appear on a WWE show which is not wrestling based would do wonders for WWE and their network because it would bring in a larger audience.

Foley is personable and outgoing enough to be able to talk to these people without showing signs of stage fright or being starstruck, in fact, I am betting many people would love the chance to sit and talk to Foley.

Another reason I think this idea could work is that WWE has a few superstars who would probably love to go on the show and do comedy sketches.

Zack Ryder is clearly a fan of doing comedy based on his YouTube show and guys like Jerry Lawler, Triple H, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels have always shown their funnier side through promos and interviews.

I could even see Vince McMahon getting in on the action and doing some comedy. There are a bunch of WWE stars who I am sure would jump at a chance to do stuff like this.

Another reason I think Foley should do this is it would give him something to do. We have all heard the news of his return to WWE, but we don't really know what capacity he will serve in.

Will he be an announcer, manager or GM? We simply do not know yet, and with a talk show like this, it would give Foley a reason to stick around and WWE fans the chance to see one of their favorites after he has stopped wrestling full time.

I have high hopes for the WWE network because from everything I have seen, they are really putting a lot of effort behind it. I just hope it does not cost an arm and a leg to subscribe to.

What do you think, would you watch a talk show hosted by Mick Foley?
