Mike Shanahan and 7 Coaches Who Deserve to Be on the Hot Seat
This is the time of year when we can actually label teams "contenders" or "pretenders" while also being able to declare which head coaches' jobs are in jeopardy.
With that being said, there's one head coach that comes to mind immediately, and that's Mike Shanahan. The Washington Redskins started off great this season with a 3-1 record, but have now lost four straight games. Take into consideration the team's current collapse and a few other factors, I think that it's safe to say that Shanahan deserves to be on the hot seat.
What other coaches deserve to be on the hot seat besides Mike Shanahan?
Gary Kubiak
1 of 8The time to win is now in Houston, and if the Texans don't start winning soon, then Gary Kubiak's time as head coach is likely over.
The Texans are 6-3 on the season and are sitting pretty atop of the AFC South, but regardless, Kubiak still deserves to be on the hot seat.
Why, you might ask? Well, for starters, the Texans have never made a playoff appearance in the franchise's existence, and Kubiak has been there since 2006, so patience is certainly limited in Houston.
Just let me put it this way: Kubiak will be on the hot seat for the remainder of the season. If his team does not make the playoffs, then he will likely be jobless.
Tony Sparano
2 of 8When are the Miami Dolphins going to fire Tony Sparano? I mean, we all know it's coming, but it's just a matter of time.
Miami is a pitiful 1-7 on the season, and there are no chances of Sparano's squad salvaging the remainder of the season.
When your team starts off the season with seven straight losses, I think it's a fair assumption that you're going to be on the hot seat. Sorry, Coach Sparano.
Jim Caldwell
3 of 8Not all of the blame for Indianapolis' miserable 0-8 start should be placed on Jim Caldwell, as a lot of should be placed on the team's upper management, but he certainly still deserves his fair share.
Caldwell is ultimately a sock-puppet on the sidelines, with Peyton Manning controlling him. Now that Manning is not playing due to a neck injury, there is no one controlling Caldwell, which causes a pretty disastrous train wreck in Indy.
I'm not too sure that I'm convinced that the Colts will actually fire Caldwell by the end of the season, but I 100 percent believe that he deserves to be on the hot seat.
Mike Shanahan
4 of 8So much for being a legitimate contender in the NFC East—the Washington Redskins are falling, and they're falling hard.
There is no doubt in my mind that Mike Shanahan deserves to be on the hot seat. His Redskins started off an impressive 3-1, but then went onto lose four straight games.
Washington does have some talent on its roster, but their quarterback situation is a complete joke, and most of that blame needs to be placed on Shanahan, as he is the head coach and the team's executive vice president.
Andy Reid
5 of 8It's time to move on in Philadelphia. The Eagles need to either start winning or to simply fire Andy Reid—it's quite possible that his time has come in the city of brotherly love.
Reid is the NFL's longest tenured head coachm as he's been with the Eagles since 1999. Reid has had his success with the team, as he's went to one Super Bowl and has gone to five NFC championship games, but has yet to win the big one.
Entering 2011, this Eagles roster was absolutely stacked and loaded with talent—hell, their backup quarterback even labeled them the "dream team." That obviously is not the case.
The Eagles are an embarrassing 3-5, which is tied for third place in the NFC East, and that is definitely not acceptable.
Philadelphia had the ability to be an elite team this year, but for some reason, Reid has yet to get it together.
Jack Del Rio
6 of 8How does Jack Del Rio still have a job? I'm being serious—Del Rio should have been fired years ago.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are the NFL's most mediocre team. They always find a way to make things interesting and stay somewhat competitive, but they can never put together an actual, legitimate playoff run—so wouldn't it make sense to move away from Del Rio?
Jacksonville is 2-6 on the season, which is a huge underachievement in my opinion. The Jags may have a rookie at quarterback in Blaine Gabbert, but they still have a talented defense as well as one of the NFL's top running backs in Maurice Jones-Drew. This team could have had a legitimate shot at winning the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts having a down year.
If the Jags don't put together some sort of run this season, then I will find it hard to believe that the Jaguars wont fire Del Rio.
Jason Garrett
7 of 8This may be Jason Garrett's first season as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, but he's proved that he is not capable of being an NFL head coach—well, in my opinion.
Garrett's Cowboys are a lousy 4-4, and there is no excuse for a .500 record. This team is far too talented to be underachieving like the way that they are.
A prime example of why Garrett should not be a head coach in the league came against the New England Patriots, when he literally gave the Patriots the victory as he was too afraid to get beat. He appeared to have the mentality of trying not to lose the game instead of trying to win the game.
Late in the game, Garrett called three straight one plays, with one being on a 3rd-and-long, and ultimately gave the ball back to Tom Brady and the Patriots and went onto lose the game.
I know putting Garrett on the hot seat may be a bit extreme for some of you, but I guarantee you that Jerry Jones is probably questioning Garrett's abilities to be head coach of America's team.
Norv Turner
8 of 8Enough is enough. The San Diego Chargers need to move on without Norv Turner as the team's head coach.
Turner's Chargers started off the season with an impressive 4-1 start, which certainly brought optimism to San Diego, as the team is infamously known for its sluggish starts. Well, I guess they're making up for it now, as the Chargers are currently on a three-game losing streak, and a lot of blame is on Turner.
Turner is a great offensive mind and is probably better off as an offensive coordinator, not as a head coach. Turner has made so many questionable coaching decisions over the years and has ultimately choked every season with teams that have been loaded with talent.
It's time to move on.
