MLB Trade Rumors: 10 Pitchers Teams Missing out on CC Sabathia Can Deal for

Josh ToyofukuNov 9, 2011

Throughout the 2011 MLB season, there was much speculation that New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia would opt out of his contract with the Yankees and test the free agent waters.

Teams dreamed of prying away the Yankees ace, but it wasn't meant to be.

On Oct. 31, Sabathia agreed to a deal with New York that added on an extra year to the contract along with $30 million guaranteed.

Many teams who were hoping to strike it rich with Sabathia are now left to scour the rest of the league for pitchers to fill out their rotations and bullpens.

Here is a look at the best pitchers available through trade.

Trevor Cahill

1 of 10

Trevor Cahill is only 23 years old and was named to the 2010 All-Star team.

But that doesn't stop one of the best young pitchers around from reportedly being available in a trade.

General manager Billy Beane has said that he will listen to trade offers for every member of the Oakland Athletics, except for second baseman Jemile Weeks.

Wandy Rodriguez

2 of 10

The Colorado Rockies are expected to pursue left-handed Wandy Rodriguez after coming up short in obtaining him at the trade deadline last season.

Rodriguez's current team, the Houston Astros, doesn't necessarily have a need for a top-of-the-line starter, as they won't be competing in the pennant race for a few years.

It makes sense for them to deal him for prospects to build for the future.

Andrew Bailey

3 of 10

Andrew Bailey has been a solid closer for the Oakland Athletics for the past three years, amounting 75 saves for a mediocre team.

Because of his abilities, the young pitcher may be becoming too pricey for general manager Billy Beane and the A's.

As Buster Olney has stated, that could put him on the move to a place like Toronto, where bullpen depth is sorely needed.

Jair Jurrjens

4 of 10

The Kansas City Royals made a hard push to acquire Atlanta Braves righty Jair Jurrjens at the trade deadline, but that deal never happened.

Now that the Royals have traded for Jonathan Sanchez of the San Francisco Giants, it seems like there isn't much need for Jurrjens in Kansas City.

But apparently, that isn't the case, as they are still interested in the 25-year-old.

Gio Gonzalez

5 of 10

Another young pitcher for the Oakland Athletics who could be on trading block is star lefty Gio Gonzalez.

The 2011 All-Star is the cornerstone of the A's young rotation and would be the hardest for general manager Billy Beane to part with.

But for the right price, Gonzalez could be headed elsewhere.

John Danks

6 of 10

John Danks, of the Chicago White Sox, is another pitcher who could be on the move.

In an effort to cut the team's payroll, general manager Ken Williams has stated that he will field offers for Danks, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

The 26-year-old lefty could be a good pitcher in the middle of a playoff team rotation.

Jeremy Guthrie

7 of 10

Jeremy Guthrie, the Baltimore Orioles right-hander, is said to be available through a trade as well.

He has been a good and fairly reliable pitcher during his time in Baltimore, playing for a bad team. In addition to that, he has to face off against some of the best teams in the majors: the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.

He would be a durable, end of the rotation pitcher.

James Shields

8 of 10

Year after year, the Tampa Bay Rays always have one of the best minor league systems in the Major Leagues.

In 2011, they showed that again with the emergence of Matt Moore.

Moore's success as a rookie has led to speculation that James Shields could be on the trading block with the Miami Marlins waiting in the wings to go after the 29-year-old.

Gavin Floyd

9 of 10

Gavin Floyd is another pitcher from the Chicago White Sox who could be dealt this offseason.

Floyd, much like Danks, could be a very solid pitcher on the back end of a rotation for a playoff team. On the flip side, he could also provide good veteran leadership for a young and rebuilding team.

Huston Street

10 of 10

The second closer who is going to be shopped this winter is Huston Street of the Colorado Rockies.

Street will reportedly lose his closer role in 2012 to Rafael Betancourt. It is only fair that the Rockies will try to put him in a position where he can be an everyday closer.

With such a thin market for free agent pitchers, the 2012 MLB offseason should be filled with plenty of exciting trades—revolving around the pitchers who were mentioned in this list.
