LA Dodgers: Frank McCourt's Ouster as Owner Gives Fans Reason to Celebrate

Mike ChiariNov 3, 2011

After months of Major League Baseball trying to push Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt out the door, he finally agreed to sell the team on Tuesday. While no new owner has been determined yet, it didn't stop disillusioned Dodgers' fans from celebrating.

On Wednesday, 50 fans of the team gathered outside Dodger Stadium in a rally led by Roger Arrieta, who runs the website "Mark Cuban Save the Dodgers." While there isn't any indication that Cuban will buy the Dodgers at this point, the removal of McCourt is just as good for most fans.

Said Arrieta:

"The goal of this was always to save the Dodgers. I would love for it to be Mark Cuban, but if it's Steve Garvey or Orel Hershiser or Peter O'Malley, that would be great too. We just want somebody who will restore the Dodgers to the team we all grew up with."

While McCourt was never viewed as the most stable owner in the league, things started to fall apart over the past year as McCourt and his wife Jamie went through a messy divorce. The split put ownership of the Dodgers in limbo and brought to light many injustices.

McCourt reportedly extracted $189 million from the Dodgers during his time as owner for his own personal use. This was mostly to support the lavish lifestyle that he and Jamie enjoyed, despite the fact they were actually living beyond their means.

The last straw for McCourt was when the league had to take control of the team in April. There were some questions regarding whether McCourt would be able to make payroll during the season, and that is something that would be unacceptable, even at the lowest levels of professional baseball.

McCourt also caught a lot of heat for the attack of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow outside of Dodger Stadium on opening day. While McCourt wasn't directly responsible, the attack brought to light security issues that were present at the stadium.

Ultimately, McCourt simply couldn't effectively run the team any longer, and a series of unfortunate events made that clear to the public. It can't be easy for McCourt to relinquish control of an asset he presumably loves, but it is the right thing for Dodgers fans and baseball as a whole.

Baseball is simply in a better place when the Dodgers are successful. Due to financial restrictions, the Dodgers couldn't make significant moves to improve last season, despite the fact that they had plenty of great pieces such as NL MVP contender Matt Kemp and NL Cy Young contender Clayton Kershaw.

Seeing as Major League Baseball is sure to be very careful in the owner selection process for one of its premier franchises, it is a given that the organization will be in far better shape next season and in the seasons that follow.

Whatever the case, Dodgers fans will once again be able to focus on baseball rather than what type of shenanigans are going on in the front office. McCourt hasn't done much right during his tenure, but officially stepping down was perhaps his greatest gesture to supporters of the Dodgers.
