8 NFL Coaches You Wouldn't Want Coaching Your Kids
The NFL can be an intense place in which to work. Nowadays, job security is often week-to-week and some coaches are on the hot seat from the moment they walk through the door.
Understandably, then, emotions can often get the better of some coaches, resulting in some on-and-off-the-field displays that you can only pray your youngsters don't see.
With that in mind, here's eight NFL coaches you don't want coaching your kids on Saturdays...
Sal Alosi
1 of 7Former New York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi is better known as the man responsible for the infamous "trip."
His bizarre actions sent Nolan Carroll head over heels whilst chasing down a punt that left him slow to get up.
Alosi quite justly no longer has a job with the Jets, and his name will be forever linked with his foolish decision-making here.
There's no place for this in the world of sports; this one isn't even debatable, and it reflects particularly badly on an NFL that is looking to boost its international image.
Alosi's actions were enough to get him on this list, as I'm sure there's not many youth coaches out there that wouldn't whoop some ass if one of their young players did something this unsportsmanlike.
Tom Cable
2 of 7Next stop: Oakland, and I think you can all guess why.
Former Raiders head coach Tom Cable finds himself on this list, because of his jaw-fracturing punch to the face of third-year assistant Randy Hanson in 2009.
To add insult to injury, reports suggested, "that Hanson never saw it coming."
Firstly we have an action that is so unfitting of someone in one of football's best and most visible jobs, and secondly we find out that it was a veritable cheap shot.
Try explaining that one to your kids.
Cable's not all bad though; he certainly wore the hell out of those bowling shirts.
Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz
3 of 7Now before you head to the comments section to decry me, listen up!
I'm sure both of these guys are great at their jobs. With both teams seeing a resurgence in 2011, the future is certainly bright and I have a lot of respect for both of them.
However, I may be old-fashioned but the display these two put on after the game was despicable.
I understand Jim Harbaugh was fired up; who wouldn't be after knocking off the hottest team in the NFL (at that point)? But as a head coach you should act in a professional way, and Harbaugh certainly didn't that night. The fact that I now know what Harbaugh's belly looks like was enough to land him on here.
Culprit No. 2, Jim Schwartz, violated one of the first lessons we teach kids: don't retaliate. No matter how badly your opponent acts, you should never stoop to their level. Schwartz didn't just stoop to Harbaugh's level, he dug himself a big ol' hole.
While these guys may well get themselves off of this list someday, they'll have to endure the shame of it all just a little bit longer.
Mike Ditka
4 of 7Mike Ditka is one scary Hall of Famer.
He is without a doubt a football legend, but boy was he mean!
Ditka makes an appearance on this list because if he ever coached kids, I don't think they would ever set foot on a football field again; as a matter of fact, they'd probably hop on the next flight out of the US!
Ditka was a no-nonsense guy, and was far from your Pete Carroll-style, rah-rah, "you can do it" kind of coach.
He even famously challenged his Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan to a halftime fight during a losing effort against the Miami Dolphins in 1985.
It takes a big man to endure the coaching style of "Iron" Mike Ditka...a really big man.
Rex Ryan
5 of 7He was always going to make it onto this list.
The f-bomb-dropping, headset-smashing, foot-loving head coach of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan makes his way onto this list for a multitude of reasons as mentioned.
Ryan talks a big game, and has backed it up for the most part in his two years as a Jet.
At 4-3, his 2011 team are yet to find their feet and people are beginning to criticize Ryan more and more.
Ryan is loved by his players, with his straight-talking pinpointed as a reason for their admiration for him.
How that would transfer to kids remains to be seen; all I know is, if my child came through the door dropping f-bombs and wanting a "goddamn snack," I wouldn't be too pleased!
Andy Reid
6 of 7It's easy to go after someone because of their weight, and that's exactly what I'm going to do here.
Now, Andy Reid may well be a great football coach at the pro level, coaching professional athletes, but we're talking about coaching kids here and Andy Reid is most definitely not suited to that job.
I'm a firm believer in practicing what you preach, and Reid would have a hard time singing the merits of exercise and getting out and about to the youth of today.
Could Andy even see a child over that waistline?
Cruel, I know, but with obesity on the rise in the western world, would Andy Reid really be a great poster boy for things like the NFL's Play 60 campaign?
It's unfair to single out Reid here as there are a number of NFL head coaches with big waistlines. Unfortunately for Andy, the number of young, fit head coaches entering the league is growing, just like his stomach...
Joe Cullen
7 of 7Who is Joe Cullen you might ask?
Cullen is currently serving as defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it was during his stint in Detroit that he made headlines.
Cullen was arrested twice in two weeks, the first offence being for driving under the influence, something that is becoming all too common in today's NFL.
The second was for driving through a Wendy's drive-thru completely nude.
Hold on, he did what?
Yes, Cullen's offence seems inherently laughable, but the man is clearly of questionable character, and after reading that, there's not many of us who would want him imparting wisdom on our children anytime soon.
One thing is for certain though: Cullen is such a "bro."
