Is Rex Ryan the Biggest Punk Patrolling the NFL Sidelines?

Josh ToyofukuNov 2, 2011

NFL coaches usually fit into one of three categories.

1. Loud, brash coaches who you love to play for but hate to play against
 2. Quiet, calculating coaches
 3. Coaches on the hot seat

Coaches on the hot seat are always interesting to talk about as speculation surrounds their every move. The quiet coaches usually stay out of the media and let their team do the talking for them.

But the loud coaches are the most interesting. Controversy is usually just around the corner and they are always good for a quality quote.

And more times than not, they can come off as jerks.

The poster child for this type of coach is New York Jets' coach Rex Ryan.

But is he really the biggest punk patrolling the sidelines in the NFL?

Honorable Mention: Tom Cable

1 of 7

Tom Cable is currently the offensive line coach for the Seattle Seahawks.

However, from 2008 to 2010 he was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. In 2009, he was accused of punching one of his assistant coaches, Randy Hanson, during training camp.

On the personal side, he has also been accused of beating two ex-wives and an ex-girlfriend.

Honorable Mention: Josh McDaniels

Josh McDaniels is another assistant coach who used to be in charge of a different organization. He is currently serving as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams after being fired from the Denver Broncos.

During his time as the head coach of the Broncos, from 2009-2010, he was a very controversial coach.

He not only forced rookies to come to the facility at 5:30 a.m. to practice comedy skits, but he effectively ran starting quarterback Jay Cutler out of town. While he isn't the best, he is certainly better than Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn.

McDaniels was also involved in a videotaping scandal in November of 2010.

5. Jim Harbaugh

3 of 7

Jim Harbaugh came to the San Francisco 49ers with a track record of having a relatively loud mouth.

During his time at Stanford, he repeatedly called out USC and former coach Pete Carroll—but he backed up his talk and finished 3-1 against the Trojans.

In his first season with the 49ers, Harbaugh has brought that rash style with him to San Francisco.

Earlier in the season, the Niners took down the undefeated Detroit Lions in a down-to-the-wire game. During the postgame handshake, he shook head coach Jim Schwartz's hand strongly and slapped his back as he ran away down the field.

It could have ended there but Jim Schwartz wanted to give Harbaugh a piece of his mind.

4. Jim Schwartz

Jim Schwartz, the coach of the Detroit Lions, took that altercation with Jim Harbaugh to the next level.

Rather than letting the incident pass, he ran after Harbaugh shouting things at him. This led to players from both teams getting involved and a fight almost broke out.

Yes, Harbaugh started it all but as a professional, Schwartz should have kept his cool.

3. Todd Haley

5 of 7

Todd Haley is yet another relatively new head coach in the league. And just like the rest on this list, he has his fair share of critics.

Haley is the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and is known for his very aggressive coaching style. He is often seen yelling at players and other coaches on the sideline.

After a game against the Denver Broncos in 2009, Haley refused to shake Broncos' head coach Josh McDaniels' hand.

2. Rob Ryan

6 of 7

Rob Ryan, Rex Ryan's twin brother, is the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.

This is his first year at the helm and he's already run off his mouth enough for an entire season, specifically calling the Philadelphia Eagles the "All-Hype Team" before the season even started.

In the weeks before the Cowboys huge Sunday night matchup against the Eagles, he repeatedly called them out and claimed how the Cowboys' defense would stop Philly's high-powered offense.

Once the game was finally played, Ryan was humbled as the Eagles put up 34 points.

And the Winner Is... Rex Ryan

7 of 7

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is all bark and no bite—much like his twin brother.

But the difference between Rex and Rob is that Rex is a head coach and that makes what he says more important.

Ryan has promised the Jets' organization and fans a Super Bowl ring in 2009, 2010 and again in 2011. Clearly, the first two promises were not fulfilled and as the Jets sit at 4-3 right now, a Super Bowl berth is certainly not a guarantee.

Rex is often very sarcastic and rude to the media as well.

Now that he's promised his third Super Bowl in three years, it's time for Rex to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

Until he does that, he'll still be the poster-child of polarizing and irritating NFL coaches.
