Around the Top 25: Sunday’s Results

Matt NorlanderFeb 10, 2008

UPSET–Washington 71, No. 5 UCLA 61.

For four-straight years the Huskies have beaten the Bruins in Seattle, and for four straight years I have missed this freaking game.

I was beginning to really think that UCLA would take the title this year (and this loss could actually help the team in the long run), but I don’t like when a team like UCLA loses on the road to a Washington club that’s really, in my opinion, not even NIT material.

Keep it in the memory bank. Little man Justin Dentmon gave 20 of his points to the Huskies, helping shut down Darren Collison in the process.

No. 3 North Carolina 103, Clemson 93 (2OT).

Well, you could say that Clemson has played UNC to their absolute limits this season—without being able to beat the Heels.

HANSBROUGH WITH 39 AND 13? Just give him every POTY award now, please. I won’t accept applications for anyone else.

Anyway, a 45-34 halftime advantage for the Tigers on the road wasn’t enough, I guess.

I see that Clemson couldn’t hold an 11-point lead with just over three minutes to go as well.

Oy.

The Heels also have to look to their 86 percent shooting from the charity stripe as a secondary reason (to Psycho T) for the double-OT win. Yeah, yeah, everyone knows that Clemson has lost in 53 straight attempts at Chapel Hill.

No. 13 Xavier 76, Saint Joseph’s 72.

The Musketeers get a big win (to keep them in the top-four seed lines) by scoring the final eight points of the game to steal this one back from the Hawks.

St. Joe’s, I think, is benefited from such a loss on the road here.

I don’t buy the case that all losses are bad. No, I think St. Joe’s could be a 17-5 team if they hadn’t lost two real close ones to Xavier and Syracuse.

Of course, the argument is there that if St. Joe’s were a better team then they would’ve won those two games.

Yeah, I can buy that, but I still put a lot of good into this kind of loss.

No. 14 Indiana 59, Ohio State 53.

Watched this entire game and man was it a bore.

Classic score-in-the-50s Big Ten ball. *Snooze*.

Buckeyes could’ve really used the win at home against a team that will almost definitely get a five seed or better.

Now the ‘Eyes need to pick up road win against Northwestern and Michigan this week.

Notable:

Arizona State 59, Arizona 54.

Arizona absolutely came out with the type of play that you WANT to see this team showcase on a nightly basis…then they went on to allow the Sun Devils to outscore them 57-32 and blow a home game against a reeling rival.

Rhode Island 65, Fordham 63.

The Rams avoid what could’ve been a season-defining loss.

Temple 80, Massachusetts 70.

Despite their respectable RPI, the Minutemen are now 4-5 in the A-10 and that just ain’t gonna do it. They’ll need to run off about six in a row now.

Creighton 72, Southern Illinois 53.

Originally thought that this game would’ve meant a lot more.
