Week 9 Waiver Wire: Ben Obomanu and Others You Must Add

Andrea HangstOct 31, 2011

If your league is anything like mine, it's wide receiver and not running back that has become the most difficult position to plan for in fantasy football.

Production varies so wildly depending on who a quarterback appears to favor, the defense's coverage and, of course, injuries. So that's why a deep sleeper receiver, the Seattle Seahawks' Ben Obomanu, leads this list of two recommended waiver wire adds for Week 9.

Obomanu got the start in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals over Mike Williams, who supposedly had a tweaked hamstring, though he never appeared on the team's injury report. More likely is that Williams was benched for poor performance, elevating Obomanu to the starting position alongside Doug Baldwin and Sidney Rice.

Chances are that Obomanu will continue to start for Seattle, and though that's an encouraging sign when it comes to his fantasy value, the fact that there's no clear starting quarterback, with Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst both seeing playing time in Week 8, means that he still retains quite a bit of risk.

But sometimes risk isn't a bad thing when it comes to fantasy football. Obomanu caught four passes—all four of his targets—against the Bengals, for 107 yards. That certainly proves that he's got good hands, something that was made evident last season when, around this time, Obomanu yet again entered the fantasy discussion.

If you're in a deeper league, or you start three wide receivers, then you have to dig into the waiver wire in order to snag fresh talent. Obomanu is going to get a significant number of targets moving forward, and if you're looking for solid value at wide receiver to either start or pad your bench, then he's a great option.

But perhaps you have needs at tight end because of an upcoming bye week or maybe you're looking for a second one to pop into a flex spot. If that's the case, it's time to give Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller a serious look.

Miller has caught four or more passes in his last three games and had seven grabs for 85 yards in his team's Week 8 win over the New England Patriots. A perennial favorite target for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Miller spends quite a bit of time blocking for the run game, which has kept his numbers low this season.

But with 30 grabs for 361 yards and two touchdowns, it's clear that Miller remains an integral part of the Steelers' passing game, finding ways to get open when Roethlisberger's other receiving targets are trapped in coverage.

With four teams and six useful fantasy tight ends on the bye next week and the Baltimore Ravens coming to town, Miller is a very attractive starting option for Week 9.
