Fantasy Football Week 8 Rankings: Ranking the Top 10 QBs

Gary DavenportOct 24, 2011

Seven weeks have passed in the 2011 fantasy football season, and while some old stars are standing strong at quarterback (such as Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints) and new stars have emerged (such as Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers), some players have struggled (such as Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons), leaving their fantasy owners grumbling in frustration.

In order to help minimize the grumbling and maximize happiness among fantasy football owners, here's a breakdown of the top 10 fantasy signal-callers for Week 8.

And no more grumbling!

10. Eli Manning, New York Giants (vs. MIA)

1 of 10

2011 Stats: 125-of-196, 11 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 1 rushing touchdown

Fantasy football's 10th ranked signal-caller should come out of the New York Giants' bye week strong, as Eli Manning's opponent this week, the Miami Dolphins, has allowed the second most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks.

9. Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos (vs. DET)

2 of 10

2011 Stats: 17-of-37, 240 yards, 3 touchdowns, 15 carries, 102 yards, 1 touchdown

C'mon, don't fight it...catch Tebow fever!

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow's numbers in Week 7 certainly don't jump out at you (13-of-27 for 161 yards and two scores), but the second-year pro still managed to place seventh among fantasy quarterbacks last week, and his dual-threat ability makes him a more than viable fantasy starter.

8. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (at DEN)

3 of 10

2011 Stats: 162-of-269, 1,912 Yards, 16 touchdowns, 4 interceptions

Matthew Stafford had his worst start of the 2011 season for the Detroit Lions Sunday, but an upcoming matchup with the Denver Broncos, fantasy football's friendliest matchup for opposing signal-callers, is likely just what the doctor ordered to get Stafford back on track.

7. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (at KC)

4 of 10

2011 Stats: 141-of-218, 1,715 yards, 7 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 1 rushing touchdown

There have been more downs than ups so far this season for San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, who has struggled to an 18th place ranking among fantasy quarterbacks, but the eighth-year veteran could be primed to rebound against the Kansas City Chiefs, who have allowed the seventh most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this year.

6. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans (vs. JAX)

5 of 10

2011 Stats: 137-of-224, 1,893 yards, 12 touchdowns, 5 interceptions

Even though he's been without the services of star wide receiver Andre Johnson for several weeks, quarterback Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans is still quietly assembling another top 10 fantasy campaign, and that success should continue this week in a reasonably favorable matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

5. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (at PHI)

6 of 10

2011 Stats: 140-of-217, 1,756 yards, 10 touchdowns, 6 interceptions

There may well be no more Jekyll-and-Hyde quarterback in the NFL than Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys, but if the Cowboys are going to win their big NFC East matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles this week, they'd better pray they get more of the former and less of the latter.

4. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. DAL)

7 of 10

2011 Stats: 123-of-200, 1,573 yards, 9 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 372 rushing yards

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick hasn't posted the sorts of obscene fantasy numbers that he did a season ago, but the 10th-year pro still ranks fifth among quarterbacks in fantasy points per game and has a decent matchup with the Dallas Cowboys this week.

3. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (at PIT)

8 of 10

2011 Stats: 160-of-237, 2,163 yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions

Although the Pittsburgh Steelers are 30th in fantasy points per game allowed to opposing quarterbacks, it's nearly impossible to seriously consider benching New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who is on pace to throw for a ridiculous 5,768 yards and 43 touchdowns this year.

2. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (vs. MIN)

9 of 10

2011 Stats: 152-of-252, 2,103 yards, 8 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 266 rushing yards, 7 touchdowns

Rookie Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers continues to be the biggest fantasy surprise at his position in 2011, and Newton's success will likely continue this week against a Minnesota Vikings defense that will likely be without two of its top three cornerbacks.

1. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (at STL)

10 of 10

2011 Stats: 212-of-299, 2,477 yards, 18 touchdowns, 8 interceptions

Fresh off torching the Indianapolis Colts for five touchdowns, quarterback Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints travel to St. Louis to face the winless Rams, and given that the Rams have allowed the sixth most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season, odds are Brees is in for another huge game.
