Matthew Stafford is expected to have an MRI on his injured leg after being hit at the end of today's contest against Atlanta, according to NBC's Mike Florio.

"

"Matthew Stafford suffered a right leg injury late in Sunday’s loss to the Falcons.  Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Stafford will have an MRI to examine whether and to what extent he has damage to his knee and ankle.

We’re told that Stafford is optimistic that he’ll be OK.  ”It takes a tank to keep him out,” the source said."

"

Stafford has been on the injured reserve two times in his career and he is only in the midst of his third season. It seems like an annual tradition to shut the Lions QB down before the season is over.

He made it through 10 games his rookie year and just three games last season.

This season it finally seemed like he emerged as a top QB worthy of the No. 1 overall draft selection the Lions took him at, and he has been healthy.

Now he is injured again.

According to Jason La Canfora, reporter for NFL.com, Stafford was injured late in the game against the Falcons.

It is definitely a sight all too familiar for Lions fans.

The team is now on a two-game losing streak after winning their first five games.

If Stafford misses an extended amount of time with this injury, the Lions could risk missing the playoffs.

They are having a great season so far despite those two losses but they have to play in the same division as the Green Bay Packers, who are currently undefeated.

They also have the Chicago Bears breathing down their neck, currently sitting at 4-3.

The Lions need Stafford healthy to guide them to their first playoff appearance since 1999.

Shaun Hill and Drew Stanton are the two backups behind Stafford. Neither is any sort of long-term solution for the team, and neither will be able to navigate the rest of the tough schedule without taking a bunch of losses.

The best-case scenario is that Stafford is just slightly banged-up and it is just something he can shake off. Unfortunately, his history of injuries has every Lions fan fearing the absolute worst.

Can you blame them?
