Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Rex Grossman and 6 Other Players You Can Ditch
Fantasy Football’s Week 7 is approaching as the NFL lines up for mid-season action again on Sunday. With teams like the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals on a bye week, who should you drop in consideration of upgrading your team?
This week’s bye is an opportunity to snatch some good fantasy players who may have been dropped in order to make room for someone who’s actually playing this week.
Hint: Keep an eye out for the 49ers defense on waivers.
To pick up someone who can upgrade your team, however, you need to make room. Who are you going to cut to salvage the second half of your season?
Kansas City RB Thomas Jones
1 of 7Thomas Jones is running behind an awful offensive line in Kansas City. The team has gone from one of the top newcomers last year, to the worst in the league in 2011. Even without Jamaal Charles, Jones is struggling to find fantasy points. Jones rushed for 55 yards in his last appearance and has yet to score a touchdown.
Look for other alternatives to Jones, as it's apparent he won't do much this season. He may have a one-game spark in him, but one game isn't worth your season.
New Orleans Saints WR Devery Henderson
2 of 7Fantasy owners who picked up Devery Henderson to fill in for an injured Marques Colston can let Henderson go. Colston not only looks healthy, but has returned to form as a fantasy behemoth at receiver. Besides giving the benefit of the passes to Colston, Drew Brees likes to spread the ball around, which hurts Henderson’s chances to give teams any fantasy value.
For owners attempting to patch the hole left by an injured Colston or owners simply looking for a third or fourth receiver, drop Henderson. There are other valuable candidates who can support your bench.
Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton
3 of 7The controversy at quarterback in Denver is at an all-time high. It looks like the Denver Broncos are more concerned with putting fans in the seats than winning. Then again, Kyle Orton opened the door to Tim Tebow when Orton failed to secure the position as a starter. Orton hasn’t put up great fantasy numbers, and the quarterback rotation will only serve to diminish any further value Orton may have.
Drop Orton and consider lesser names, but better values in Colt McCoy or Andy Dalton if they’re still available. If you’re in a keeper league, consider planning for your future with Orton’s spot.
Washington Redskins QB Rex Grossman
4 of 7Fantasy owners should ditch Rex Grossman and look for other viable candidates to replace the former Washington Redskins starting quarterback. John Beck will be replacing him this week, so you could bench Grossman in the hopes that he’ll return. Then again, if he returns, is he worth the risk? Fantasy owners were livid with Grossman's performance last week.
Our suggestion is to move on and part ways with the former Florida Gator.
Chicago Bears RB Marion Barber
5 of 7The former Dallas Cowboy is struggling in Chicago. As if the Bears’ offensive line wasn’t bad enough to stop any running back from accruing meaningful points, Barber is buried behind starter Matt Forte. With Forte as Chicago’s everything back, Barber isn’t getting points he’s used to receiving. It’s unlikely he’ll do much more this season, either.
Ditch Barber and replace him with someone like C.J. Spiller, who has potential. For example, the Bills are attempting to give Spiller more touches by lining him up at receiver. Barber isn’t going to get those opportunities.
New England Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco
6 of 7There is a popular school of thought that Chad Ochocinco combined with Tom Brady would result in some serious fantasy points once Ochocinco grasped the system and became comfortable with Brady. Everyone who took him knew this would be an investment. At this point, however, Ochocinco’s stock is worthless with no foreseeable increase in value. Like many investments, this one failed.
Drop the New England Patriots receiver and look for another player to bolster your roster, if you haven’t done so already.
Miami Dolphins TE Anthony Fasano
7 of 7A product of college football’s new tight end university, Notre Dame, Anthony Fasano has struggled to put up any points this season. The Miami Dolphins are generally ineffective, Chad Henne is injured for the rest of the season and his replacement, Matt Moore, isn’t targeting his tight end. Instead, Fasano is a better blocker in the Dolphins system. Unfortunately, fantasy teams can’t score points for pancakes.
If you have Fasano at tight end, you’ll find plenty of other candidates on the waiver wire.
