NBA Lockout: Expect Games To Be Cancelled as NBA Negotiations Have Broken

Gabe ZaldivarOct 20, 2011

The owners continued to play a stubborn version of hardball and the players are not about to be scared off, meaning another set of negotiations have been called off putting a pall on the season.

Sign up for Netflix, plan that month long trip to the Amazon or get into hockey. Whatever you deem to be your NBA doomsday scenario, do it.

The bad news came over the ticker in the form of tweets from the best in the business. Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that the negotiations that had been going on for days had indeed broken down.

He then tweeted what could have been the biggest stumbling block on the road to a new CBA being formed.

ESPN quoted NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver as stating:

"

We understand the ramifications...we are we're saddened. Ultimately we were unable to bridge the gap. ... At this time we have no further discussions scheduled. We'll have to regroup and determine what our next steps are.

"

Those next steps are all that any fan cares about. The question of will we see the NBA in this calendar year has a very grim answer.

I will offer a gross assumption that the season is about to take a huge hit. The players and owners are still miles apart on basketball-related income, and there is no reason to think they can bridge that gap anytime soon.

While the initial reports state the NBA will regroup and determine the next action after some tempering of emotions, the writing is on the wall for us all to read.

More games will be cancelled. There is no other assumption that I can make at this time. The owners want to make up for a system that allows them to shoot themselves in the foot with bad contracts and the players don't want to lose the money they have enjoyed for years.

Both sides are far from legal agreement, but are even farther apart on the reality of the league. While owners see the NBA as close to the NHL, others will scream that you can't fit this league in the same exact box.

The push and pull will continue for what looks like months. The scary part for fans is that players have been preparing for this for a couple years, and owners can go without a season and still be healthy in financial respects.

Games by Christmas? I fear it is far more grim than that. I would be surprised if we have games by next season.
