Terrelle Pryor: How Long Until We See Al Davis' Last Oakland Raiders Draft Pick?

Jimmy HalOct 17, 2011

Oakland Raiders starting quarterback Jason Campbell suffered an unfortunate season-ending collarbone injury against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. This was a major blow to Campbell, as he was proving he could lead a team to a playoff push—and to the Raiders, who now find themselves very weak in the quarterback department.

Campbell may not have had a breakout season statistically, but he had this team playing at a much higher level than any other quarterback before him since Rich Gannon.

Now, the Raiders are dependent on the arm of Kyle Boller—a former first-round pick who has disappointed many in his career.

Boller fell on tough times during his time in Baltimore, and has not proven to be any better in either St. Louis or Oakland. As the Raiders heard of the severity of Campbell's injury, they were immediately linked to the names of QBs Carson Palmer and David Garrard.

Which begs the question: How much faith do the Raiders really have in Boller?

Palmer and Garrard are both names that will not be content sitting on the bench behind Boller or rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Many fans have discussed the idea of Pryor playing this year, and there seems to be one consensus theme: Only play him if you absolutely have to.

Has that time come?

If the Raiders got their hands on either Palmer or Garrard, they would be Band-Aids for what seems to be a broken collarbone.

Neither quarterback has played in 2011, and it would take weeks before they are in what people call "football shape." Plus, neither has been in this offense before.

If the Raiders are looking in that direction, then they are basically just trying everything they can to not rush Pryor's development as a quarterback, which is the right thing to do.

But, if the Raiders can't get their hands on either quarterback, then how much rope do they give Boller before he inevitably hangs himself?

We all know that Pryor is a tremendous yet raw talent, and the time we all dreaded is now here—playing Pryor because of an injured quarterback.

Many might think that I'm giving up on this season. That I think this season is over.

What I'm saying is, if Boller will be this team's starting quarterback, and if you are going to have an eight-year veteran make rookie mistakes, you might as well have a rookie playing the position.

Though Pryor has not practiced, he has been in meetings, and it seems he has an understanding of what this offense is about. According to Campbell, Pryor has gone as far as making suggestions. That being said, he must have the playbook firmly in his mind.

Still, this is a game where practice matters, and Pryor will have a ways to go.

When many gave Pryor no chance, Davis did, and Pryor has shown appreciation.

So, when does Al Davis' last pick get his moment to prove Davis right or wrong?
