Jim Schwartz and the 5 Sorest Losers in the NFL Today
As Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz's postgame hissy fit after today's loss to the San Francisco 49ers shows, sometimes even coaches and players at the game's highest level forget the lessons of sportsmanship we were taught as kids, choosing instead to behave like children when things don't go their way.
Schwartz is far from alone in that regard, however, so here's a look at a handful of the most petulant personalities in the NFL today.
1. Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions
1 of 5Head coach Jim Schwartz of the Detroit Lions has done a fantastic job of turning the Lions from laughingstocks into contenders in the NFC North, but he certainly didn't handle the Lions' first loss of the season very well, going after San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after Harbaugh was apparently a little too happy about winning the game.
Harbaugh has a history of rubbing opposing coaches the wrong way going back to his time at Stanford, but it was still a rather juvenile display by Schwartz, who now finds himself among some rather infamous company.
2. Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis Rams
2 of 5Apparently, the ability to tick opposing coaches off is shared by the whole Harbaugh family, as Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh inspired some top-end pettiness in St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo after the Ravens blew out the Rams in Week 3.
Spagnuolo, who referred to Harbaugh as being "like a brother" before the game, reportedly told his wife after the game she was no longer to associate with the Harbaughs, although he later backtracked.
Seriously, Steve? Your wife can't play with his wife anymore? Nice.
3. Rex Ryan, New York Jets
3 of 5No head coach in the National Football League wears his heart on his sleeve more than Rex Ryan of the New York Jets, and his fiery and passionate demeanor has endeared him to Jets fans and players alike.
That demeanor has endeared Ryan most of all to headset manufacturers, however, as Ryan's propensity for throwing his to the ground in disgust when things aren't going the Jets' way is singlehandedly keeping at least three of those companies in business.
4. Bill Belichick, New England Patriots
4 of 5There is absolutely no way that a list of the sorest losers in the NFL can be compiled without including New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who has long been the gold standard among NFL head coaches when it comes to acting like a 10-year-old.
Belichick is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history and has three Super Bowl rings, but he's almost as well known for the innumerable times he's refused to shake the opposing coach's hand after a loss (dating all the way back to his time in Cleveland) as he is for all those victories.
5. Brian Orakpo, Washington Redskins
5 of 5I feel I would be remiss if I didn't point out that being a sore loser in the NFL isn't a phenomenon that is exclusive to coaching staffs; players are just as capable of acting like babies after a defeat as the men who coach them.
Enter linebacker Brian Orakpo of the Washington Redskins.
After a loss to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this season, Orakpo eschewed the high road in favor of taking postgame potshots at Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who had played the game with two broken ribs, stating that it was "blown way out of proportion, but it is what it is.”
The grace. The class. Gotta love it.
