NFL Trade Speculation: 5 Losing Teams That Should Be Sellers
As the October 18 NFL trade deadline approaches, there are some teams that should come to the conclusion their season is over and get ready to plan for the future.
The NFL trade deadline is definitely not a very exciting time of the year, with major trades happening about as often as Tim Tebow completing a pass.
However, there could be some movement this year and it is always fun to speculate.
1. Miami Dolphins
1 of 5The Miami Dolphins are 0-4 and do not seem to have a chance of turning it around, especially with QB Chad Henne out for the season.
According to sources, Henne's time in Miami is probably over.
Miami is currently in the running for the Stanford Cardinal QB Andrew Luck, who is the favorite to get picked No. 1 overall in the upcoming draft.
The Dolphins have been connected with QB Kyle Orton trade rumors. However, do not let that fool you. That would be just a temporary move for Miami.
Orton would just be someone to hold down the position for the season.
However, I doubt that deal gets done. The Broncos would probably ask for a decent draft pick, something I doubt Miami would want to give up.
Miami may be willing to let Jason Taylor go cheaply so that he may play for a contender.
An interesting move would be trading Reggie Bush. Bush has been a failed experiment for Miami and finding him a new home would be best for him and the Dolphins.
2. Denver Broncos
2 of 5The Broncos are hurting. They are 1-4 and have little chance at doing anything this year.
They are taking a risk on starting QB Tim Tebow and the future is all that is on the mind in Denver.
As of now, any veteran talent on the team is expendable.
He could command a decent return in picks for the upcoming draft.
QB Kyle Orton has lost his starting job to Tebow and if the Broncos can unload his salary and trade him, they would do it in a heart beat.
However, no GM wants to lose their job and take on the QBs salary. Orton is solid but is not a franchise type QB. I just do not see a team taking on his $7 million-plus contract.
Especially after the below average year he is having.
Safety Brian Dawkins is another veteran who might be discussed in potential trades. He can give a team a veteran boost in the secondary and add depth to a contender's defense.
3. Indianapolis Colts
3 of 5I am not sure if the Indianapolis Colts are GOING to be sellers, but I think they should be sellers.
This season is lost.
As of now, the Colts should be thinking about the future. The era of a dominant Peyton Manning is over.
He has gone to Europe to get stem cell treatment. A treatment not approved in the United States.
That is the last slimmer of hope for Manning. If that does not work, then that is the end of his career.
If it does work, then the Colts might be looking at another good year or two (if they are lucky).
However, if they do get him back, I do not expect the same MVP level play we are used to seeing.
In any case, I still feel that the Colts should trade away WR Reggie Wayne.
If Manning does come back, will he need Wayne to be successful?
No. Wayne would just be another year older and not essential to the success of a future Colts team.
Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie are a good enough one-two punch for Manning to work with.
Plus, trading Wayne now gets the Colts closer to the No. 1 pick and Andrew Luck.
Wayne could get Indianapolis a nice pick or two, and help get the team younger on both sides of the ball.
I also believe that Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney should be discussed.
Both of those players are on the wrong side of 30 and are exiting their prime. They are still very effective players and they could get high value in return now with a trade.
Again, this is all speculation at this point. I doubt that these players get moved.
4. Minnesota Vikings
4 of 5This team is going no where. Fast.
Donovan McNabb has not been able to return to form with just four TD and just under 850 yards passing.
They are 1-4 and really do not have a chance to pull themselves up.
The Vikings invested a first round pick on QB Christian Ponder so trading McNabb may not be a bad idea to give Ponder a chance to play.
If I were Minnesota, I'd also listen to offers for WR Michael Jenkins.
He is a veteran wide out that could command some decent return. He is still under 30 years old and is producing. He has 20 catches this season for 176 yards.
E.J. Henderson is another interesting player to trade.
He is a force on defense and is 31 years old. The Vikings got Xavier Adibi from the Houston Texans and he is a talented and young linebacker.
I had a chance to watch him while he was in Houston and I liked him a lot.
Henderson also has had some injury issues and has an expiring contract.
If they feel they are going to lose him or are not going to resign him, then why not try to get something in return for him?
Henderson, when healthy, is a very good defensive player. He can get you some value in return.
However, the Vikings have a fairly young defense and building for the future would be beneficial for the Vikings.
5. Chicago Bears
5 of 5The Chicago Bears are a proud team, so they probably will not be sellers, but they should be.
The Bears are a 2-3 team with an aging defense.
Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Julius Peppers and others are still effective, but are declining.
Of those players, Peppers would be the one to be traded.
I could not imagine either Briggs or Urlacher playing for anybody else.
Ever.
Roy Williams is expendable as that experiment looks to have failed.
I am not sure they could get anything for him though.
I feel Chicago needs to make room for DT Amobi Okoye. He has played well in his time he has gotten and looks to realize the potential he never untapped while in Houston.
This might mean trading Anthony Adams though.
The painful reality for the Bears is that it looks like this team might need to move in a new direction. The Lions look like they are the real deal and the Bears have looked a step behind their competition.
The Lions are not only good, but are young. If the Bears want to compete with a maturing Lions team in the coming seasons, they will need to get younger too.
The way to get younger is through the draft and by trading either Peppers, Williams or Adams, maybe the Bears can stockpile a pick or two and get younger.
