NFL Predictions Week 6: Power Ranking Top Teams After Weekend
After just five weeks, there have been many twists and turns to kick off the 2011 NFL season.
There have been many teams that have played up to or down to expectations. There have also been just as many teams that have shocked fans across the nation.
Although it's still early in the season, it's never too early to start predicting which teams are the best in the league.
Here are predictions for the top five power rankings after the conclusion of Week 6 action.
5. San Diego Chargers (4-1)
1 of 5The one knock on the San Diego Chargers over the last couple seasons has been their horrendous starts every season.
With the lockout, Chargers fans were concerned that the season would kick off worse than usual.
That fear has subsided, and the Chargers have a 4-1 record after six weeks.
Philip Rivers is leading one of the most dangerous offenses in the league. They have one of the best defenses in the league.
The schedule laid out in front of the Chargers is a fairly simple one. Keep it together, and this team is all but guaranteed a playoff berth.
4. New Orleans Saints (5-1)
2 of 5The New Orleans Saints are quietly putting together one of the better seasons in the league.
After stomping on Tampa Bay this weekend, the Saints will be sitting at a 5-1 record with nobody talking about them.
Chances are, that's just the way that they want it.
The only team that has beaten the Saints this year was the Packers in Week 1. They only lost that game by a single possession, and a fluke kick return touchdown was the difference maker.
Drew Brees will have the Saints back in the playoffs, and the team will compete with the best in the NFC for a Super Bowl berth.
3. New England Patriots (5-1)
3 of 5The New England Patriots have the best offense in football.
They may be second in scoring with 33.0 points per game, but make no mistake. This is the best offense in the league.
Tom Brady currently has the team averaging 366.6 passing yards per game. That's the best in the league.
What's shocking is that the Patriots are also averaging 128.6 yards on the ground per game. That's sixth in the league.
The only real concern is this team's ability to stop the pass. They are currently the worst ranked team in the league in the category.
This may be slightly inflated due to opposing team's being forced to throw the ball to keep up with the Patriots offense, but it is still a concern.
There is plenty of time to patch that up. This is still the best team in the AFC.
2. Green Bay Packers (6-0)
4 of 5Right now, Aaron Rodgers is the best player in the NFL.
He has the Packers scoring a league high 34.6 points per game. He is completing 71.2 percent of his passes. He has 1,721 yards, 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has rushed for two more touchdowns. He has a passer rating of 122.9.
Rodgers is the best player in the league. He has the defending Super Bowl Champions on fire to start the year.
Just like the Patriots, there are some concerns on defense.
The Packers are ranked 30th when it comes to stopping the pass.
Again, teams may be throwing a bunch to try to keep up inflating the statistics, but it is a cause for some concern.
Not much, though. This is an unbelievably talented football team.
1. Detroit Lions (6-0)
5 of 5I can't lie. Just looking at an undefeated record and a No. 1 next to the Lions name just doesn't feel right.
That said, they are the best complete team in football right now.
I'm not saying that they are going to the Super Bowl or that they will even win the division.
What I'm saying is that thus far, they are the best complete football team in the league.
Their 31.8 points per game is currently the fourth best in the league. They are allowing just 17.8 points per game on defense, which is also fourth best in the league.
This is a team that is playing fantastic on both sides of the ball.
I'm excited to see if the performance continues.
