Can Roy Williams and The Tar Heels Go Undefeated?

Sayre BedingerDec 4, 2008

There has not been an undefeated college basketball team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers.  Could the 2008 North Carolina Tar Heels break the streak?

In eight games this season, the Tar Heels are averaging a stunning and unheard of 31-point margin of victory, and the competition hasn't been a bunch of scrubs.

UNC has already beaten then No.8 Notre Dame 102-87, and No.12 Michigan State 98-63.  Not to mention a crushing defeat of perennial powerhouse Kentucky, by a final score of 77-58.

But even though the Heels are seemingly unstoppable, are they capable of running the table?

It's definitely not out of the question, seeing as they have beaten two top 12 teams by a combined score of 208-150.

The only team standing in this team's way resides at Cameron Indoor, the home of the Duke Blue Devils.

While their schedule hasn't been as arduous, Duke is 8-0 in their own right, and has a very good veteran squad.

However, the Tar Heels are poised to cut down the nets come early April, and I don't foresee Duke standing in their way.

Carolina is simply too deep, too talented, and too well coached.

There has not been a team that could manage to go undefeated in the ACC since the 1999 Duke team, but this Carolina team is arguably the most complete team in college history.

Ultimately, I think going into the tournament undefeated may be too much pressure for any college team, but there is no doubt this group is capable.

Tune in folks, because someday you will want to tell your children and grandchildren about the 2008 North Carolina Tar Heels.
