Week 6 Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Fantasy Football: Jahvid Best and RBs Who You Must Sit

Zachary D. RymerOct 12, 2011

If you own Darren McFadden, Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, LeSean McCoy or any other running back that has proven to be a fantasy goldmine in the early portion of the season, I'm pleased to report that you have nothing to worry about this weekend.

Everyone else—you need to be on high alert. It seems that more running backs than usual are facing tough matchups this weekend, and the last thing you want to do is trust that everything will work out.

Especially if you own one of the three running backs listed below.

Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers

After missing Week 5 with a hamstring injury, it sounds like Rashard Mendenhall is going to be able to return to action in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Whether or not he will start is another issue. Per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, we know that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn't have much to say in that regard.

"We'll see where his participation (in practice) leads us," Tomlin said. "We'll let his level of health and participation in the work week dictate that."

Sounds like trouble, which is not good for a guy who has been bad enough this year. I expect limited carries for Mendenhall, and even more limited production seeing as how the Jags have been very tough against the run this season.

Steven Jackson, St. Louis Rams

Steven Jackson is getting to that point where you just don't know what you're going to get out of him on a weekly basis. His injury woes should be completely behind him after St. Louis' bye week, but even then...

The even more unfortunate part concerning Jackson for Week 6 is that he has a very tough matchup on his hands. He and the Rams will be taking on the Green Bay Packers, who have been giving opposing running backs hell all season.

However, that's not the big concern. The big concern is that the Rams' offense will likely be forced to take to the air early and often, as there is just no other way to keep pace with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense.

Jackson's role will be limited as a result.

Jahvid Best, Detroit Lions

Jahvid Best was pretty amazing against the Chicago Bears on Monday night, rushing for a whopping 163 yards on just 12 carries. Of those yards, 88 came on a single run.

That's what concerns me. Best is certainly explosive, but he is not an every-down back. He's highly unlikely to get more than 15 carries in any game, and his rushing average is going to be a bit more modest than it was on Monday.

Particularly against a team like the San Francisco 49ers.

They have given up fewer fantasy points to running backs than any team in the league, and that's no accident. Their front seven is virtually impenetrable, and it has yet to allow a 100-yard rusher or even a single rushing touchdown.

The best way to deal with this front seven is to go over and around it, not through it. Best is in for a light day at the office.
