Week 5 Start 'Em Sit 'Em: Sidney Rice and 4 Other Must Starts
Still struggling to decide who should be in your imaginary starting lineup and who should be on your equally imaginary bench?
With Week 5 on the horizon, teams with two wins or fewer can ill-afford to make many more mistakes in the fantastically frustrating world of fantasy football.
But with some savvy maneuvering there is hope yet. If you happen to own any of the players on this list, make sure to insert them into your lineups before you miss out on a huge performance.
WR Sidney Rice
1 of 5Okay, well you knew this guy was on the list—I only have his name in the headline. Still, with Tarvaris Jackson being his quarterback, many people questioned the value of Rice before the season started.
In the two weeks since Rice has made his Seattle debut, he has 11 catches for 188 yards and a touchdown.
In Week 5, he'll be going up against a banged-up New York Giants' defense that ranks 18th in the league in pass defense. All signs point to Rice continuing to prove critics wrong in this one.
WR Julio Jones
2 of 5Rookie wideout Julio Jones has proven to be everything the Atlanta Falcons were hoping for when they jumped up in the 2011 NFL draft to select him.
In just four games, Jones has 24 receptions for 342 yards, putting him on pace for 96 catches and 1,368 yards this season.
In Week 5 he'll be going up against the 31st-ranked Green Bay Packers' pass defense. That should already be enough said, but it's more clear-cut than that. Atlanta's No. 1 receiver Roddy White, nursing an injury, continues to start, thus drawing most of opposing defenses' attention. White also leads the league in drops.
This makes Matt Ryan all the more likely to throw to the young receiver that he targeted 17 times in Week 4.
TE Owen Daniels
3 of 5Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels is primed to become the team's focal point of the passing game this week because of the injury to Andre Johnson.
Plenty of other people have suggested to pick up Houston's No. 2 and No. 3 receivers, Kevin Walters and Jacoby Jones, for this week, but in the past those options have proven to be untrustworthy targets when given the opportunity.
Owen Daniels is already better than average fantasy tight end, and he's one of Matt Schaub's favorite targets.
With the extra targets to go around, expect Daniels to come down with a few more grabs than normal this week as a check down option.
QB Mark Sanchez
4 of 5I don't care who the quarterback is, when they're playing against the New England Patriots defense they're gonna throw a lot and for a ton of yards.
No defense has given up more passing yards this season than the Patriots' 1,475 in just four games. That is a whopping 369 yards against per game, almost completely nullifying Tom Brady's amazing 385 per.
Mark Sanchez looked bad in Week 4, but the Baltimore defense has the ability to do that to any quarterback when they're playing at the top of their game.
If you have Sanchez, put him in your lineup without hesitation and watch your points pile up.
RB Stevan Ridley
5 of 5Stevan Ridley may seem like a huge risk to be a must-start candidate this week, but the New England Patriots showed last week that they are trying to balance out their offensive attack.
If the Pats start running the ball more, Ridley has easily looked like the team's best running back through four games. Each week this season he has been fed the ball more than the last, and he has not disappointed.
The overrated New York Jets defense has given up an astounding 130.5 yards per game on the ground this season, making this just the type of weakness New England coach Bill Belichick would love to exploit.
Trust me, this week is Stevan Ridley's coming-out party.
