Fantasy Football Rankings Week 5: Mark Sanchez Leads List of QBs Ready to Shine

Adam WellsOct 6, 2011

To say that Mark Sanchez had a bad game last Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens would be an understatement; he would have loved it to just be bad last week. There may not be an appropriate word to describe the way he played last week, but as luck would have it, he gets to play New England in Week 5.

The Patriots have been awful defending the pass all season long. They rank 32nd in the NFL in pass yards allowed per game, giving up nearly 369 yards per game.

It is not entirely the secondary's fault because the defensive line has not been putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks, which means the defensive backs are left on an island for too long. They have just six sacks on the season, four of which have come from the line.

Aside from the game against the Ravens in Week 4, Sanchez has been a solid fantasy quarterback this season. Don't give up on him yet, because he has the best matchup of the weekend and should have the best fantasy game of his young career.

But the Jets quarterback is not the only quarterback primed for a big fantasy game in Week 5. Here are three others to keep an eye on when determining who should start for your team this weekend.

Eli Manning, Seahawks vs. Giants

Eli Manning has had a solid start to the season. His passing yardage has increased in each of the last three games (223 in Week 2, 254 in Week 3 and 321 in Week 4).

The biggest thing with Manning this season is limiting turnovers. After throwing 25 interceptions last season, he has just two through four weeks and none in the last two games.

The Seahawks have allowed at least 250 passing yards in their last three games, and they have struggled against better offensive teams they have played.

Manning is going to have another big week with at least 275 yards and two touchdown passes.

Josh Freeman, Buccaneers vs. 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are riding high after their comeback victory against Philadelphia last week, but if you look at the yards they gave up—513 total, 416 passing—they don't have a lot to be happy about.

The secondary has been a problem for the 49ers all season long, and things don't get any easier as they go against Josh Freeman this week.

Freeman is not an explosive quarterback; he is not going to have that one huge game that makes you take notice, but he always puts up a solid 240-260 yards and two touchdown passes every week.

He has a favorable matchup his week, so he should improve upon those standard numbers quite a bit.

Matt Ryan, Packers vs. Falcons

Matt Ryan has not had the big year most of us were expecting him to have after last year and with the addition of Julio Jones at wide receiver. However, he is showing signs of coming out of his early funk.

The Falcons quarterback has thrown for 521 yards and two touchdowns the last two weeks combined. Roddy White, his favorite target, has not been healthy all season, but Jones is starting to emerge as a No. 1 receiver with 17 catches the last two weeks combined.

The Packers have had their problems stopping the pass this season, so Ryan is due to have a big game this week. And you know the Falcons will be amped up looking for some semblance of revenge after that 48-21 loss in the divisional playoff round last season.
