Ben Roethlisberger Injury: Why Mike Wallace is a Terrible Week 5 Fantasy Option

John RozumOct 4, 2011

Even though WR Mike Wallace is the Pittsburgh Steelers' best receiving threat, playing him in Week 5 for fantasy football isn't such a good idea.

Before we get to his QB, let's breakdown his numbers.

On the year he has 25 receptions for 454 yards, but only two TDs.

Wallace's per game averages are 6.25 receptions, 113.5 yards, and 0.5 TDs.

He averages 18.2 yards with every catch, has recorded 20 first downs and has been targeted 31 times.

The biggest concern here are his number of TDs, because compiling over 100 yards per game is certainly a very good average.

Another reason why the Steelers have been more pass-oriented this season is because their rushing attack is ranked No. 21 in the NFL, and only averages 93.8 yards per game.

They are one-dimensional but are still able to move the ball thanks to other receiving targets such as Hines Ward and TE Heath Miller, in addition to Roethlisberger's ability to extend plays.

And, speaking of Roethlisberger, ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that Big Ben could be able to suit up on Sunday:

"

"Mike Tomlin thinks Ben Roethlisberger might be limited in practice early in the week with his foot injury but he thinks he'll play Sunday."

"

That being said, Roethlisberger is not having a good year. Despite solid passing yards, he's thrown three TDs to five picks.

He has improved since Week 1, as he threw three interceptions in that game, but he's been sacked 14 times and hit an additional 21.

Add to that his current foot injury, and even if he plays on Sunday he's not going to be 100 percent.

In turn, the Steelers will have to revert to their ground game, which has not been effective enough to help setup the pass.

The final reason why Wallace should take a seat this week is because the 3-1 Tennessee Titans invade Pittsburgh, and they have a top-10 defense against both the rush and pass.

Not to mention they bested the Baltimore Ravens 26-13 in Week 2.

Also favoring Tennessee is the resurgence of RB Chris Johnson, who got back on track last week after holding out all of training camp.

The Titans are going to run the ball against a vulnerable Steelers' rush defense, keep Wallace off the field and control the game tempo.

It's going to limit Wallace's opportunities, in addition to the double coverage he'll see when Pittsburgh's on offense.

Additionally, the Titans are going to pressure Big Ben all day, thus limiting his time to even find Wallace.

If Pittsburgh has success in Week 5, it will be on screens and draws to RB Rashard Mendenhall, as well as check-downs.

Wallace will see a blanket all day, because for Tennessee to win this game they must force Pittsburgh's offensive line to block, as that is where everything begins.
