Robinson Cano: 5 Ways the Superstar is Becoming Next Iconic Yankee
Robinson Cano has had the mold of a superstar ever since he graced those pinstripes and he is turning into one of the finest players in baseball.
Many questioned how serious he takes the game and whether or not his plate discipline would ever improve, but holy cow is he one fine talent.
Finishing up his seventh year of his career (29-years-old on October 22) Cano is already on pace to break many records in the near future. Winning another World Series and continuing his postseason greatness would go a long way in his illustrious, yet young career.
Superstar Personality
1 of 5Cano has the special look as if he is ready to become the next great Yankee. The way he walks, talks, fields and swings makes that an accurate statement.
He is a calm, cool, collective athlete that can flat out do it all. However, when he does talk (which is not much) it is always with extra confidence. He is a relaxed guy that lets the game come to him and he never rushes anything he does. He has the face of a superstar with that smile that just flashes and glows for the camera.
Robinson Cano proved he could hit the long ball during the Home Run Derby, but he has continually proved it during clutch situations, in the regular season and postseason, that has given an exclamation mark on that superstar mode.
Five Tool Player
2 of 5Robinson Cano can do it all: Fielding, throwing, running, hitting for average and hitting for power. Cano finished the season hitting .302 with 28 HR's and 118 RBI's. He did not steal many bases (8), but give the kid the break since he is often trotting around the bases after a dinger instead.
Cano is coming off his first ever Gold Glove (2010), but there is a great chance he will soon be picking up his second Gold Glove sooner rather than later.
He is smooth with an absolute hose and he makes the game look effortless. So many second basemen could not make a web gem to save their lives, whereas Cano makes it a routine every night.
Primetime Wood
3 of 5Forget about winning the Home Run Derby, but Mr. Cano has now had four seasons with 188 or more hits and is a lifetime .308 hitter. He is expected to win his third Silver Slugger Award ('06, '10) and should finish in the Top Five in the AL MVP voting again.
That is clearly his next goal and there is a great chance he can accomplish it. His silky smooth swing is a once-in-a-lifetime type of swing that even the best in the business dream they had. His power for a second baseman is absurd and he can hit a pitch anywhere on the plate out of the park with authority.
He hit .342 in his second season in the Major's and has hit over .300 another three times. Cano may hit in a favorable ballpark with great players around him, but it is Cano's talent that often makes the players around him better than they really are. 118 RBI is filthy and he hit 5th for most of the season, which means he had opportunities and he took full advantage of them.
Gold Glove
4 of 5Cano arguably has the best arm in baseball at his position and you could make the argument that his arm strength is better than a middle infielder even. Which infield would you rather chose over this guy for the near future?
He rarely boots a ball and has amazing, quick hands up the middle with Derek Jeter and his effortless skills has only made players around him more jealous through the years.
Expected to pick up his second Gold Glove, Cano may add on half a dozen more if he can continue to stay healthy in the Bronx.
Yankee Great Potential
5 of 5Forget his potential because he has proven time after time in recent memory that he comes through in the stretch. With runners in scoring position this season Cano has hit .318 with 8 home runs and 91 RBIs!
"Don't ya know" Cano is among the Top 10 hitters in the game and very rarely does he go through stretches where he is not getting good wood on the ball. He has slowly turned into the giant killer in the "Bronx Bombers" lineup and if you don't look now he might be the most talented player in the American League.
Not only does he have the makings of becoming arguably the greatest second baseman of all-time, but if he continues, his legacy could someday say he is arguably one of the greatest New York Yankees of all-time.
