Fantasy Football Week 4: The 7 Best Players No One Has on Their Roster

Ryan DayJun 7, 2018

Okay, so you drafted Peyton Manning and Jamaal Charles and you were riding pretty high on your fantasy football hopes.

Then Week 1 came around and absolutely sunk you.

You've compiled a 1-2 record through three weeks of fantasy football and you just checked the preview—you're a 25-point underdog to that guy who will never let you live down a loss.

You need a win, but your roster has more holes than a Polish submarine. What do you do?

Read on and check out the best players you can pick up today in your fantasy football league.

RB Kendall Hunter: San Francisco 49ers

1 of 7

With Frank Gore nursing an ankle injury, Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers utilized rookie running back Kendall Hunter last week against Cleveland. He impressed the coaching staff with a performance that included 26 yards rushing and the only touchdown of the game.

He's firmly planted himself as the backup running back in San Francisco, and if Gore's ankle injury persists, look for Hunter to get a lot of carries (especially considering the 49ers' passing woes).

Pick him up and monitor how he does this week against the Eagles. If he turns in another solid performance, he might be worth a spot as your No. 3 running back when the 49ers host the Bucs.

Hunter is owned in only 7.4% of ESPN leagues and 21% of Yahoo leagues.

RB Roy Helu: Washington Redskins

2 of 7

The Washington Redskins have used rookie running back Roy Helu sparingly, but you can tell the coaches really like him. From his production with the specialty packages they've put together for him, Helu is in the Redskins' plans for the future.

I don't suggest picking Helu up for what he can give you this week, or even the next, but Helu is one of the best backup running backs in the league and the only one who would get at least 20 carries a game if the guy in front of him went down.

Pick Helu up in case Tim Hightower goes down.

After all, Hightower has never carried more than 153 times in a season and he's already got 59 rushes through three games. We don't know how much endurance Hightower has and if he pulls a hamstring late in the season with the Redskins out of the playoffs, you'll be glad to have Helu.

Even if Hightower never goes down, Helu is averaging seven touches a game and that figures to only increase as the season wears on (and Hightower's body wears down).

Helu is owned in only 31.1% of ESPN leagues and 33% of Yahoo leagues.

RB/WR Dexter McCluster: Kansas City Chiefs

3 of 7

With Jamaal Charles hurt, running back Dexter McCluster's stock went up. With head coach Todd Haley listing him on the depth chart as a running back and wide receiver, he's invaluable, even if he only produces marginal numbers.

Why? Because guys who are listed as running backs and wide receivers can take up either spot on your roster.

Got a wide receiver who's up against a terrible pass defense? Start McCluster as a running back. Got a guy up against a terrible run defense? Start McCluster as a wide receiver.

Building a fantasy roster full of guys like McCluster and Woodhead and then playing the matchups is a strategy I used last year to win my championship.

Pick him up and keep him on your roster to serve as a backup when you've got guys on bye weeks.

McCluster is owned in only 52.3% of ESPN leagues and 59% of Yahoo leagues.

WR Brandon Gibson: St. Louis Rams

4 of 7

If you're in a PPR league and need a safe option, wide receiver Brandon Gibson of the St. Louis Rams is a safe bet to add to your roster.

In the first three games of the season, Gibson has been targeted 17 times by quarterback Sam Bradford and has caught 12 balls for 157 yards and a touchdown.

His worst outing was Week 1, when he had three receptions for 50 yards, but he's only improved as the season's gone on. He caught four balls for 52 yards in Week 2 and hauled in five receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown last week against the Baltimore Ravens.

Gibson is owned in only 2.9% of ESPN leagues and 7% of Yahoo leagues.

QB Jason Campbell: Oakland Raiders

5 of 7

My fantasy strategy is to have two or three decent quarterbacks on a roster and then play the guy who's got the best matchup.

If you've got someone you can release, do yourself a favor and pick up quarterback Jason Campbell from the Oakland Raiders. It's a wonder Campbell hasn't been snatched up in more leagues.

After throwing for a touchdown and rushing for another in Week 1 against the Broncos, he lit up the scoreboard and had three total touchdowns against the Bills in Week 2.

Last week, he fell off a bit against the New York Jets, but if you believe Campbell can duplicate the performances of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Chad Henne, you need to add him to your roster today.

Campbell is owned in only 32.8% of ESPN leagues and 19% of Yahoo leagues.

QB Donovan McNabb: Minnesota Vikings

6 of 7

It feels kind of weird to be saying this, but Donovan McNabb is one of the least owned quarterbacks in fantasy football. I know, I know, it's been a few years since his success at Philadelphia, but he's still worth being picked up.

Especially this week against the Kansas City Chiefs, who are allowing over 260 passing yards a game and letting quarterbacks rack up 109 points in only three games.

Pick up Donovan McNabb and then bench him on Tuesday.

McNabb is owned in only 37.4% of ESPN leagues and 25% of Yahoo leagues.

Washington Redskins Defense and Special Teams

7 of 7

It may seem strange, but the Washington Redskins' defense might be worth a look this week.

They ranked second-to-last against the pass and gave up 377 points last season, but they've hung in there each of their first three games in 2011.

They have eight sacks, five turnovers, a blocked kick and a touchdown so far. and now they face the winless St. Louis Rams.

After facing the Giants, Cardinals and Cowboys, the Rams should be a cinch.

The Redskins D/ST is owned in only 28.1% of ESPN leagues and 26% of Yahoo leagues.
