Ozzie Guillen Fired: White Sox Skipper Talks His Way out of a Job

Ryan RudnanskySep 26, 2011

Throughout the years, Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has been known just as much for his mouth as his record.

The only problem is, once your record doesn't match your mouth, you find yourself talking to nobody.

And so appears the plight of Guillen, who reportedly will be sent to the Florida Marlins in a swap at the end of Monday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, taking over for interim manager Jack McKeon.

Guillen has a career record of 677-617 with the White Sox, including a World Series ring. He's the only manager in White Sox history to lead the team to more than one division/league title. But he's always been a controversial manager who speaks first and answers questions later. He's been one of the White Sox's greatest assets, and their greatest pain in the side all at once.

That's why his alleged ousting isn't much of a surprise. The White Sox have endured Guillen for more years than probably any team in the nation could have endured him. He's already won them a championship. The only thing that really was stopping them from firing him was that he was winning. You can't exactly fire a manager who is helping fill the stadium.

But this season was a massive letdown for a team expected to contend for the division. With three games remaining (including Monday night's game), the White Sox have a 77-82 record this year and find themselves 15 games out of first place.

“I’m not expecting to be with the White Sox for the rest of my life because we win the stinking World Series. The year after, I said that. If they don’t think I belong here, they’ve got all the right to move on. I’ve said that a lot of times. Not because I win the World Series, oh he’s here for life. I’ve seen a lot of managers win the World Series and get their ass kicked a year later.

“They should f------ fire me. Look at what I did. I got a great team that play like s---. Why not? I take the responsibility.’’

"

The Sun-Times reported in October that the White Sox and Marlins had been discussing a swap of Guillen for talent in the Marlins' system. The reason? Irreconcilable differences between Guillen and general manager Ken Williams. The two haven't talked in the last month.

Guillen didn't make many friends in the organization after his infamous press conferences, but he was always kept around because the White Sox generally were in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Now that they aren't winning, his mouth has overtaken the team's play on the field.

And he's still talking.
