Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Torrey Smith and 5 Must-Have Pickups

Richard LangfordSep 26, 2011

This is the time of year to make the key waiver wire pickups to carry your fantasy team to a championship. Trends have been firmly established, and new players are quickly emerging.

Like Baltimore Ravens WR Torrey Smith. Smith exploded on the scene on this Sunday with five catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns.

You need to sprint to grab Smith off the waiver wire. Those kinds of numbers won't leave him available for long.

They also can't be ignored by the Ravens. While it would be foolish to expect such a prolific output from him every week, Smith is certainly going to get his share of opportunities. He clearly has good chemistry with Joe Flacco, and he is going to get his share of passes headed his way.

Denarius Moore, WR (Oakland Raiders)

1 of 5

Moore exploded in Week 2 against the Bills with more than 150 yards receiving and a touchdown. He was not as spectacular in Week 3, but he cemented his status as a viable fantasy option.

Moore didn't start for the Raiders, but he proved he was going to get plenty of snaps even as the team returns to health.

Against the Jets, Moore caught four passes for 34 yards and added a 23-yard rushing touchdown.

Hue Jackson proved he is determined to find ways to get this exciting young player the ball and put him in a position to succeed; Moore has also taken over punt return duties for the Raiders.

Victor Cruz, WR (New York Giants)

2 of 5

With the Giants' Domenik Hixon lost for the year to a torn ACL, the door was opened for an increased role for Victor Cruz.

Cruz proved he was ready to produce as he hauled in three passes for 110 yards, which included a pair of touchdowns.

This was also against the Eagles' tough secondary.

Mark Sanchez, QB (New York Jets)

3 of 5

Mark Sanchez is available in 28 percent of leagues on NFL.com. He is worth an add.

The Jets are proving that they have become a passing team; their weak O-line dictates it. Sanchez has three good receivers, backs who can catch and an awesome tight end.

He is going to get plenty of attempts to produce, and the above-mentioned weapons offer him a variety of excellent red-zone weapons for valuable touchdown passes.

Nate Washington, WR (Tennessee Titans)

4 of 5

Kenny Britt was lost for the season on Sunday, which instantly made Nate Washington a viable fantasy wideout option.

Washington was already having a solid season—and that figures to get better. He caught eight balls for 92 yards and a touchdown on Sunday.

Matt Hasselbeck looks good operating this offense, and the line is giving him time. Washington should be a solid contributor for the rest of the season.

Jason Hanson, K (Detroit Lions)

5 of 5

Have to have a little kicker love in here. I'm always shuffling my kickers because I never draft a good one.

Jason Hanson doesn't have as strong a leg as he used to, but he is still accurate.

And, more importantly, the Lions are turning into an offensive juggernaut.
