Philadelphia Eagles: Why They Should Turn to Vince Young Instead of Mike Kafka

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

The sky is falling in Philly, and now the Eagles are left with an extremely difficult decision.

Vince Young or Mike Kafka?

Starter Mike Vick has a broken right hand that will keep him out of action for the next couple of weeks. Head coach Andy Reid decided to put in Kafka on Sunday once Vick went down.

He promptly threw an interception on his first play of the game and ended up going 4-of-7 for 35 yards and two INTs.

The "dream team" is off to a nightmarish 1-2 start and needs a QB that can save this sinking ship.

Here's why it's time to go with Mr. Young.

1. Young Has More Experience

1 of 5

Young has been in the league since 2006 and sports almost 50 career starts to his name.

Kafka is in his second year and has a grand total of zero starts in his career.

Life is never easy in the NFL when you play QB, but it's next to impossible to be successful when you have no experience (unless your name is Cam Newton).

Kafka isn't Cam Newton.

He will be going through some serious growing pains in his first few starts. The Eagles don't have time to be patient. They need a guy that can step in right away and keep the team competitive.

Young may not be the best pocket passer, but he knows how to read an NFL defense and has seen every type of formation the league has to offer.

The learning curve isn't there, and that's a big deal for the desperate Eagles.

2. 30-17

2 of 5

It's a stat people tend to forget with Young.

As a starter with the Tennessee Titans, he has won 30 of his 47 starts.

I'm pretty sure a large amount of the league would be thrilled to have a QB with a record like that.

His stats may not be pretty, but he finds a way to come out on top.

3. Better Fit for Offense

3 of 5

Young can tuck the ball and run like Vick, which gives the O-Line some sort of familiarity.

The two players have very similar playing styles, and the playbook wouldn't have to be drastically altered.

In the middle of the season with your backs against the wall...this is a good thing.

4. Young Has Matured

4 of 5

The ego of Young is one of the main reasons his tenure in Tennessee was so shaky.

He clashed with coaches, teammates and even fans as Young continued to believe everyone was disrespecting him.

Finally, at the age of 28, he's grown up, and his focus has shifted to the team.

5. Kafka Is Terrible

5 of 5

Don't be fooled by his decent debut against the Falcons last week. The play calling was extremely conservative, and he didn't have to make many tough throws.

He was horrific against the Giants, and it was a cold reminder why 121 players were taken before him in the 2010 draft.

If they keep Kafka under center, Philly can cancel the rest of the season.

Young is the best bet at this point to keep this sinking ship afloat.
