Michael Vick Injury: How Much Blame Does Eagles Coach Andy Reid Shoulder?

Ryan PhillipsJun 3, 2018

In case you haven't heard by now, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has a broken right hand.

The 31-year-old signal-caller took a huge hit from New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty late in the third quarter and was relieved by backup Mike Kafka, before returning in the fourth quarter. Then Vick was pulled again and appeared to be in a lot of pain on the sidelines.

Vick, who is just a week removed from suffering a concussion against the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday night, now could be out a while. While Vick was only sacked once against the Giants, he took a number of huge hits.

It was obvious all day that he should have never been in the game.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid shoulders all of the blame for this. Last Monday he should have been the responsible one and mandated that his $100 million quarterback sit out this week's game. Rushing him back from a concussion was just a stupid idea.

For those who say that there is no way Reid could have known that Vick would injure his hand, you obviously didn't watch the game. Several times Vick looked lost on the field—like at the end of the first half, when tight end Brent Celek had to direct him off the field as the team attempted a field goal as time expired.

Vick got up from being tackled a few times and looked groggy and out of sorts even before injuring his hand.

Reid should have known better, and never should have allowed his team's most dynamic play-maker to risk his health this week.

The Eagles made a six-year, $100 million investment in Vick during the preseason, and allowing him to play just a week after being concussed was not only short-sighted, it was reckless. Especially considering we're only in Week 3 of the season.

Now with Vick out Kafka is going to have to step in and play anyway. If the Eagles had just swallowed hard and trotted him out there this week while allowing Vick to fully heal from his concussion things could be different.

Reid is the guy making all the decisions for the Eagles, and he never should have allowed Vick to take the field, regardless of whether or not the quarterback thought he was OK to go.
