Bill Belichick's Best Squad Yet: 5 Reasons To Believe in New England Patriots

Annamarie RussoSep 23, 2011

Weeks 1 and 2 of the season proved to be victories for the New England Patriots.  In only Week 1, opposite the Miami Dolphins, QB Tom Brady set a career high, while he and WR Wes Welker tied for an NFL record with a 99-yard pass play.

There is reason enough to believe that even early on in the season, Bill Belichick has got his best team yet.

1. Tom Brady, QB

1 of 5

Only two games into the season and already stellar quarterback Tom Brady has thrown for a combined 940 passing yards.  Brady set a career high for himself with 517 passing yards in the first game for a win against the Dolphins and another 423 yards in the Pats victory over the San Diego Chargers

As long as the Patriots continue to secure and improve their offense despite injuries to crucial players, they will be able to help protect Brady and keep Brady brilliant.

(Tight end Aaron Hernandez is out for an undetermined length of time due to an MCL injury and tight end Dan Gronkowski was not present during Friday’s practice due to a hamstring injury.)

2. Aaron Hernandez, TE

2 of 5

Although TE Aaron Hernandez is out for an undetermined length of time because of an MCL injury he suffered in the win against the Chargers, he is still part of the reasons the team is great.  Even with his left knee hurt, Hernandez caught the ball from a five-yard pass.

For the two games played thus far, Hernandez shines with a combined 165 yards, with 14 catches and two touchdowns.

3. Danny Woodhead, RB

3 of 5

The 5’9” running back Danny Woodhead is proving his height to offer an advantage: leverage.  In Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, Woodhead carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards.  Week 2 was less impressive with only four carries for 12 yards against the Chargers but the running back appears to be very swift and will most likely improve.

Woodhead is already lower than his opponents which gives him leverage and will hopefully prove advantageous.

4. Wes Welker, WR

4 of 5

WR Wes Welker caught a 99-yard pass from QB Tom Brady in the 38-24 win over the Dolphins.  This tied the NFL record.  In Week 2 opposite the Chargers, Welker had seven receptions for  81 yards.

Welker is capable and therefore will most likely keep this up.

5. Rob Gronkowski, TE

5 of 5

During Week 1 in a victory over Miami, TE Rob Gronkowski caught six passes for 86 yards and made his first touchdown on a 10-yard pass from QB Tom Brady.  During Week 2 against San Diego, Gronkowski caught four passes for 86 yards.

With only two games so far, his stats prove he has potential to remain solid.
