John Sterling Gone as Yankees Radio Voice?: His Greatest Home Run Calls

Robert KnapelSep 23, 2011

John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman have been the radio voice of the New York Yankees for years. However, now there are reports that the two may no longer be calling games for the New York Yankees.

The duo's return is in doubt because of the fact that the Yankees might not be returning to WCBS-AM. It is not certain where the Yankees will be on the radio next year, but one option is ESPN and WRXP.

If Sterling does not return, his great home runs calls will be missed by many Yankee fans.

Mark Teixeira

1 of 10

John Sterling manages to work not one, but two puns into this home run call. Mark Teixeira not only hits a "Teix" message, but he is also on the "Mark."

This call is classic Sterling. His exuberance and excitement really come through on this call.

Lance Berkman

2 of 10

Sterling's typical excitement is not there on this call, but it is still a great one. Lance Berkman hits a home run to give the Yankees the lead in the playoffs.

Sir Lance-a-lot saved the day for the Yankees and his home run led to another great John Sterling call.

Russell Martin

3 of 10

The New York Yankees' catcher has give John Sterling a number of opportunities to make a home run call this season. Russell Martin has hit 17 home runs on the year.

Martin has certainly showed off his power on a number of occasions and has shown why the Yankees signed him. The reason that Sterling started speaking in French is because Martin is fluent in the language and grew up in Quebec.

John Sterling is so excited about Curtis Granderson's home run that he breaks into song for a second or two.

Sterling once again pulls a number of fantastic puns out of his repertoire for this home run call. Hearing them certainly makes each call special.

Robinson Cano

5 of 10

When Robinson Cano hits a ball over the fences at Yankee Stadium, John Sterling lets out a call of "Robinson Cano, Don't Ya Know?"

Given the success that Cano has had over the past few years, everyone should know who Cano is and just how good he is.

Hideki Matsui

6 of 10

Sadly, New York Yankees fans are no longer treated to hearing Sterling's home run call for Hideki Matsui.

It is one of his better calls, and it's hard not to enjoy hearing that there was just a "thrilla by Godzilla," when Matsui took one deep.

Bernie Williams

7 of 10

Bernie Williams is a New York Yankees great and was certainly a fan favorite. So it is no surprise that John Sterling's home run call for him is a favorite as well.

Taking the lyrics from the Trammps's classic "Disco Inferno" and working it into a pun will Williams' name, fans would hear "Bern, baby, Bern" whenever Williams hit a ball that left the park.

Austin Kearns

8 of 10

John Sterling loves to sneak cultural references into his home run calls. One of his best references came whenever Austin Kearns hit a home run.

Sterling would belt out "Austin powers a home run," which is a clear reference to the Austin Powers movies.

Derek Jeter

9 of 10

Derek Jeter has worked hard for throughout his career to earn the title of the New York Yankees' captain. He does not hit that many home runs, but when he does, John Sterling has a call that fits him perfectly.

"El Capitan," Sterling bellows when Jeter hits one deep. Nothing more needs to be said. Jeter is the captain and the face of the Yankees, and this call is perfect for him.

Alex Rodriguez

10 of 10

This is the classic John Sterling home run call that has made him well-known not only by New York Yankee fans but also by fans around the league. Every single home run that Alex Rodriguez hits is known as an A-Bomb when Sterling is making the call.

As a bonus, fans are also treated to the call that Sterling makes at the end of the game as well.
